Susie Wasdin was a Cocoa Village philanthropist and fundraiser whose galas and board work raised millions for Brevard County arts, animals, education and civic causes. She died on 29 September 2026 at the age of 77, eight years after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Florida Today reported.
A member of Cocoa Beach High School's Class of 1967, she was a majorette, cheerleader, homecoming queen and student government leader. She studied at Brevard Junior College and earned an education degree from the University of Florida, then taught elementary and junior high students in Atlanta. She returned to Brevard in the early 1980s as a divorced mother of a young son and went to work for real estate developer Tom Wasdin, who had once coached basketball at her high school. He hired her to pre-sell condominiums at Harbor Woods on Merritt Island; she sold 100 units in two days. They married at sunset on a sailboat off Mallory Square in Key West on 21 August 1985 and built Wasdin Associates together while hosting the Space Coast's best-known charity parties.
For more than three decades she planned lavish fundraisers for nonprofits, arts groups, political campaigns and education foundations. Causes she championed included the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse, the Brevard Humane Society (where she helped launch the Tuxes and Tails Gala), the Brevard Cultural Alliance, Eastern Florida State College Foundation (board member 2012-2018), Florida Tech and Florida Today's Reaching Out Holiday Fund. With Tom she endowed the Tom and Susie Wasdin Endowed Scholarship for EFSC bachelor's students and helped keep the Distinguished Alumni and Friends Scholarship funded. Florida Today named her Volunteer of the Year; Tom was named Citizen of the Year.
Around 2018 she was diagnosed with early Alzheimer's after memory changes that began about 2017. The couple spoke publicly about the illness in 2023 so others might benefit, continuing a pattern of openness they had shown when Tom discussed his trigeminal neuralgia years earlier. She spent her final years in their Cocoa Village condo overlooking the Indian River, cared for at home with Tom and family, including granddaughter Delaney among her aides.
She is survived by her husband Tom; children Andrew, Lori and Steve Wasdin; and grandchildren Brayden and Delaney. Memorial details were still being finalized when Florida Today's Britt Kennerly reported her death on 30 September 2026. Eastern Florida State College president James Richey and neighbors across Brevard remembered her grace, style and relentless generosity.

Thought that was a Florida Today line but still, true.
