Tanella Boni

Tanella Suzanne Boni was an Ivorian poet, novelist, essayist and philosopher whose writing linked African letters to questions of dignity, gender, violence and belonging. She died on September 15, 2026, in Toulouse, France, at the age of 72. A death notice in Toulouse was reported by Ivorian media including KOACI and BeNews; the Ministry of Culture and Francophonie of Côte d'Ivoire and literary institutions later paid tribute. Her funeral was held on September 21, 2026, at the church of Saint-Michel-Ferrery in Toulouse.

Born on May 20, 1954, in Abidjan, Boni studied in Toulouse and Paris, earned a doctorate and became a professor of philosophy at Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny (formerly Université de Cocody), where she also directed the philosophy department. She refused to treat African thought as a footnote to European systems, arguing for philosophies nourished by African languages, hospitality concepts such as Akwaba and Teranga, and the lived experience of women and migrants.

Her books moved between poetry, fiction, essays and writing for young readers. Novels such as Matins de couvre-feu (2005), which won the Prix Ahmadou-Kourouma, and Sans parole ni poignée de main (2023), set against the 2006 toxic-waste scandal in Abidjan, examined civic crisis and memory. Poetry collections translated into English by Todd Fredson, including The Future Has an Appointment with the Dawn (2018) and There Where It's So Bright in Me (2022), carried civil-war trauma and hope into a transnational readership. Essays such as Que vivent les femmes d'Afrique and academic work on the dignity of the human person extended the same concerns into theory and feminist philosophy.

Boni chaired the Association des écrivains de Côte d'Ivoire from 1991 to 1997 and helped shape the Festival international de poésie d'Abidjan. In January and February 2025 she was a fellow at GloPhi at the University of Hildesheim, lecturing on the frontier between philosophy and poetry and speaking about barriers African authors face in publishing and translation. In 2025 she received the Prix Tchicaya U Tam'si for African poetry at Assilah, Morocco. Readers and colleagues remembered a voice that treated literature as a place of recognition for those too often unheard.
