Thomas Pritchard was a 29 year old man from Thornton, near Blackpool, who worked in an administrative role for the National Health Service. He was killed on 23 April 2025 when the red Mini John Cooper Works car he was driving left the road on Ballam Road in Lytham, Lancashire, and collided with a tree. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thomas Pritchard was not a public figure before his death. He became known locally, and then nationally, because of the manner of his death and the criminal case that followed it. Friends and family described him as a dedicated NHS employee who was proud of his work, and as someone who made the people around him feel valued. At the time he died he was preparing to move into a new home with his long term partner, a step his loved ones said he had been looking forward to.
The crash happened at around 10pm on a Wednesday evening. Emergency services were called to Ballam Road after reports of a collision, and Pritchard's car was found to have left the road and struck a tree. A second vehicle, a black Seat Ibiza, was also involved in the incident. In the immediate aftermath, Lancashire Police arrested a 19 year old man from St Annes on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and the investigation later widened to involve two further men connected to the vehicles present at the scene.
In the week after the crash, Pritchard's family issued a short public tribute describing him as a caring and helpful young man with high emotional intelligence, who was proud to work within NHS administration and who made everyone around him feel important. Lancashire Police also expressed condolences to his loved ones, and the story drew wide coverage in local and regional media, including the Blackpool Gazette and ITV News Granada.
The case returned to public attention in October 2026, when Thomas Boustead, 21, of St Annes, pleaded guilty at Preston Crown Court to causing Pritchard's death by dangerous driving. Two other men connected to the incident, Luis Williams, 25, and Sean Griggs, 21, had not yet entered pleas on related dangerous driving charges at that hearing because of issues over their legal representation. Boustead is due to be sentenced on 14 December 2026. Pritchard's death left a lasting gap for his family, his partner and his NHS colleagues, and the court proceedings have kept his memory, and the questions around how he died, in the public eye.
