Just watched the Unsolved Mysteries episode on this last night. Eighteen years old, scholarship to play volleyball, and a decade later nobody can tell this family what actually happened. That's not right.

Tiffany Ida Mae Valiante was an eighteen year old student athlete from Mays Landing, New Jersey, whose death on a New Jersey Transit rail line in the summer of 2015 has remained a disputed and unresolved case for more than a decade. She had graduated high school with varsity letters in multiple sports and had earned a volleyball scholarship to play at Mercy College in New York that fall. She was an Oakcrest High School graduate.
On the evening of July 12, 2015, a Sunday, Tiffany was at her cousin's high school graduation party. Relatives recalled that she sat by the pool, talked about college, took selfies on her phone, and played volleyball with family that evening. They said they last saw her there before she left and walked home. She later disappeared from the house following a disagreement with her parents, and in the overnight hours between July 12 and July 13, 2015, she was struck and killed by a New Jersey Transit train on a stretch of the Atlantic City Rail Line in Galloway Township, several miles from home. Her uncle, out searching for her, came across flashing police lights near the tracks and was told a pedestrian had been struck.
A New Jersey Transit spokesperson said Tiffany had been standing on the tracks near Tilton Road and did not move when the train engineer sounded the horn and applied the emergency brakes. The train was travelling from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, and no passengers on board were hurt. The county medical examiner ruled her death a suicide, a finding her family has since sued to overturn. Her parents, Stephen and Dianne Valiante, rejected that conclusion from the beginning.
Over the following decade the family pursued the case through civil litigation and public appeals. A 2022 review of the physical evidence, commissioned by the family's attorney, concluded that key items had been so poorly handled by investigators that they could no longer be reliably analyzed. Her case was later featured on a season of Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries, with her mother saying in the series that she simply wanted to know what had happened to her daughter. In 2025, ten years after her death, the family's attorneys filed a new lawsuit describing Tiffany as an accomplished student athlete and an openly gay teenager, and alleging that recovered text messages and other evidence pointed to a hate motivated killing rather than suicide.
As of the most recent reporting, the case remains legally and publicly unresolved. No criminal charges have been filed, and the original suicide ruling has not been officially overturned. Tiffany Valiante is remembered by those who knew her as a dedicated athlete and a teenager full of plans for the future, and her death continues to be examined by her family, journalists and true crime audiences searching for an explanation that has so far eluded everyone involved.
