My son in law is Tamil and he put one of Harish's videos on my phone about two years ago, something on index funds explained plain and simple. My wife and I started watching his new ones most Sunday mornings with our coffee, even though half the numbers were in rupees and meant nothing to us. 27. That's the only number that matters this morning.

V Harish was a 27-year-old Indian content creator from Puducherry who ran the personal finance brand ‘Finance With Harish’ on Instagram and YouTube, building a following of more than 1.3 million people with videos on money management, investing and personal finance. He died by suicide on 20 October 2026 at a rented villa near Muttukadu on the outskirts of Chennai, a death that has set off a public and bitter dispute in Tamil Nadu's content creator community.
Harish had spent about five years building his audience, turning himself into one of the better known Tamil language finance influencers before his death. In the days before he died, a fellow YouTuber and tech entrepreneur, Jason Samuel, the CEO of the venture studio Zemuria Inc, posted videos accusing Harish of giving investment advice without being registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) as an investment adviser and of misleading his followers. The videos were widely shared and drew supporters and critics of both men into a heated online argument. Harish's main Instagram account was subsequently disabled, and a replacement account he started was also taken down, a loss his family says left him deeply distressed.
Harish was found dead on the night of 20 October 2026. Police registered a case of unnatural death and began examining the circumstances. His father, J Vinayagam, filed a complaint at the Kanathur police station alleging that Samuel had subjected his son to sustained cyberbullying, defamatory posts and threats that caused him severe mental distress and ultimately led to his death. The complaint also alleges a demand of about three crore rupees was made against Harish, and that his family was threatened.
A video recorded by Harish before his death has since circulated online. In it, he said the five years of work he had put into building his social media presence had been taken from him, and he accused Samuel of trying to extort money from him, invoking political connections in Puducherry and threatening to post further videos against him unless he paid. These claims have not been independently verified by authorities. Samuel has denied harassing Harish and has said his original videos were a response to what he considered misrepresentation of financial credentials, not an attempt at extortion.
The death has prompted a wider debate in India about the pressures faced by social media creators, the accountability of those who publicly call out other influencers, and the adequacy of platform moderation when such disputes turn personal. Tamil Nadu police are continuing to investigate, including the video Harish left behind and the allegations made by both sides. No memorial or funeral details have yet been made public.
