My cousin called from Arkhangelsk to tell me, I didn't even know he was still alive at 92. Project 949, four decades at that yard. Strange to hear news like that standing in my kitchen in New Jersey.

Valentin Repin was a Soviet and Russian shipbuilder, a fitter and brigade leader at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk who spent four decades building and testing submarines for the Soviet Navy. He was made a Hero of Socialist Labour in 1985 for his work on the Project 949 nuclear powered cruise missile submarines and was an honorary citizen of Severodvinsk. He died in Severodvinsk on 5 November 2026, in his 93rd year.
Valentin Alekseyevich Repin was born on 4 March 1934 in the village of Letny Navolok in the Primorsky district of Arkhangelsk region, into a peasant family. He lost his mother and then his father as a young boy and at the age of eight was placed in a children's home in Nyonoksa. Some years later his elder sister took him into her family, and he finished seven year school in Pertominsk.
In 1949 he entered vocational school No. 1 in Molotovsk, as Severodvinsk was then called. Two years later he began work as a ship fitter at Plant 402, the yard now known as Sevmash, in its slipway shop. From 1953 to 1956 he did military service with the ground forces in Vologda, then returned to the yard as a fitter of ship power plants. He helped build the Project 611 diesel electric submarines, went on to lead a brigade of fitters entrusted with the most demanding and technically complex work, and took part in the sea trials of submarines, including nuclear missile boats.
His work was recognised with the Badge of Honour in 1963 and the Order of Lenin in 1974. By a closed decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of 31 July 1985 he was made a Hero of Socialist Labour, receiving a second Order of Lenin and the Hammer and Sickle gold medal, for outstanding services in the creation, testing and serial production of special equipment. Sevmash later disclosed that the award was for the Project 949 Granit nuclear submarines. He joined the Communist Party in 1973 and served on the Severodvinsk city party committee. In December 1989 the city council named him an honorary citizen of Severodvinsk.
Repin retired in 1991 and continued to live in Severodvinsk. His death on 5 November 2026 was announced by the city and by Sevmash, which described him as an honoured veteran of the shipyard. The cause of death was not made public. A farewell ceremony was arranged for 9 November 2026 at the House of Technology on Lenin Avenue in Severodvinsk.

92 is a real run for that kind of work.
