My grandfather was from Gelsenkirchen and had old Bundesliga tapes he'd play for me on Sunday afternoons, that's how I first saw Gerhardt's goal against Stuttgart in '64. He'd point at the screen and say that's our winger. Didn't know until today he lived to 87.

Waldemar "Waldi" Gerhardt was a German footballer who played as a winger and forward for FC Schalke 04 and Fortuna Düsseldorf in the early years of the Bundesliga, and who later spent decades as a coach and coach educator in the Lower Rhine region. Fortuna remembered him as one of the heroes of the club's first promotion to the Bundesliga in 1966.
He was born in Gelsenkirchen on 6 January 1939 and joined the youth teams of Schalke 04 at the age of eight, winning the West German youth championship with the club's under-19 side. At 19 he was part of the Schalke squad that won the German championship in 1958, though he did not play in the final rounds. He became a regular in the Oberliga West in 1960-61 and scored 29 goals in 74 Oberliga matches before the Bundesliga began.
In the first Bundesliga season, 1963-64, he played in every Schalke match, scored on the opening day against VfB Stuttgart and finished with nine goals. The following season he added eleven league goals in 22 games and four in the DFB-Pokal, including the opener in a semi-final at Alemannia Aachen that Schalke eventually lost 4-3 after extra time.
In 1965 he was on his way to join Bayern Munich when Fortuna's treasurer Heinz Hahn intercepted him at Frankfurt airport and persuaded him to sign for Düsseldorf instead. He scored 16 goals in 34 matches as Fortuna won promotion to the Bundesliga in 1966, and twelve more in the top flight the next season, although the club went straight back down. He turned down a return to Schalke, stayed loyal to Fortuna and retired in the spring of 1969 after 115 competitive matches for the club. In all he scored 32 goals in 82 Bundesliga matches.
Trained as a fitter and also as a computer programmer, he studied sport in Cologne and earned his coaching licence under Hennes Weisweiler. He became a sports teacher at a secondary school in Düsseldorf and coached clubs including Tura Büderich, Schwarz-Weiß Essen and VfB Remscheid, whom he led to the 1974 Lower Rhine title and the final of the German amateur championship. For two decades he helped run youth coach education for the Lower Rhine Football Association.
Gerhardt died on 30 October 2026, aged 87. Fortuna Düsseldorf announced his death, calling him a promotion hero, a passionate footballer and a man who stayed close to the club for many decades.
