Wallace Davis Malone Jr. was an Alabama banker who took his family's bank in Dothan and helped build it into SouthTrust Corporation, a Fortune 500 company with more than 53 billion dollars in assets and one of the 20 largest bank holding companies in the United States by 2004. He died on 25 October 2026, aged 90.
He was born in Dothan, the son of Wallace D. Malone Sr. and Alice Mae Dee Malone, and grew up on the family farm. His father and grandfather were bankers, and his father also farmed and loved to travel; one of his fondest memories was a road trip with friends from Dothan to Alaska and back in the late 1940s. As a teenager he served as a congressional page in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Dothan High School, the University of Alabama and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned an MBA.
Malone joined the First National Bank of Dothan in 1959. In 1971 he was appointed to the board of the Birmingham Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, and in 1972 he helped form a holding company joining his bank with three other Alabama banks, with about 500 million dollars in assets. It became SouthTrust Corporation. He served first as president and from 1981 as chairman and chief executive, leading more than three decades of growth. By 2004 SouthTrust had more than 700 offices in nine states and about 12,500 employees, and that year it merged with Wachovia, itself later acquired by Wells Fargo.
He said his proudest achievement was SouthTrust's people and culture, and former employees often told his family their years there were among the happiest of their working lives. He was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor, the Alabama Business Hall of Fame and the Birmingham Business Hall of Fame, served on boards including Troy University, Samford University, the UAB Health System and the United Way, and supported education through The Malone Family Foundation.
In 1978 he married Ocllo Boykin Smith of Mobile. They were married for 48 years and raised six children. In retirement he returned to farming at his land in Campbellton, Florida, clearing ground and mending fences himself.
Malone died on 25 October 2026 at the age of 90, with his wife at his side. No cause of death was made public. A memorial service was set for 4 November 2026 at First Baptist Church of Dothan, followed by a private burial at Dothan City Cemetery.
