My mother called me from Perm this morning while I was out watering the tomatoes and told me Chashin had died. She used to take my brother to watch him coach at the Zvezda pitch in the seventies. Eleven seasons for one city is not nothing.

Yuri Chashin was a Soviet footballer and coach whose life in the game was bound up with the city of Perm. A defender who came through the youth system of Zvezda Perm, he played for the Soviet Union youth team, spent two seasons in the top division with Krylia Sovetov Kuibyshev and later coached young players in Perm. He died on 15 October 2026, the day before his 86th birthday.
Yuri Petrovich Chashin was born in Moscow on 16 October 1940. During the Second World War his family was evacuated to Perm, and the city in the Urals became his home for the rest of his life. He learned his football at the Zvezda sports club in Perm.
Chashin joined the Zvezda first team in 1958 and played as a defender. With Zvezda he won a zonal tournament of the Soviet championship and took part in international matches, and he was selected for the Soviet Union youth team. In 1962 he moved to Krylia Sovetov of Kuibyshev, now Samara, and played 18 matches for them in the Soviet top division across the 1962 and 1963 seasons.
In 1963 he returned to Zvezda Perm, where he played until 1968. Over his two spells he spent 11 seasons with the Perm club. After retiring as a player he became a coach and worked with Zvezda. Players he helped to develop included Sergei Dyomin, Yuri Burdin, Viktor Arkhapchev, Viktor Demidov and Andrei Boglayevsky. One of his former pupils, writing on the social media of the Perm Krai Football Federation after his death, recalled that he could demonstrate any technical skill himself in training, kept an eye on discipline and on his players' school results, and was strict but fair.
His death was announced on 15 October 2026 by the Perm Krai Football Federation, which said that he had "left a significant mark on the history of sport" and offered its condolences to his family and friends. The cause of death was not made public. A farewell ceremony was held on 17 October 2026 in the indoor arena next to the Zvezda stadium in Perm.
