Found his book on the Crimean Khanate in a Krakow bookshop back in 2013, planning a trip my husband and I never actually finished taking. Read most of it at our kitchen table in Lexington instead, and it changed how I thought about that whole part of the world, treaties and trade instead of just war. Sorry to hear he's gone at 64.

my mom texted me the obituary from Kanab today, said she went to school near Fredonia and the name Mackelprang was everywhere growing up. never met him, just struck by that bit about the caregivers at Utah State Hospital being thanked by name. 67 is no age.
