June Wyndham Davies

June Wyndham Davies was born in Cardiff, Wales, on 27 June 1929 to Mervyn and Despina Wyndham Davies of Llandaff. She attended Elm Tree House convent, trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and worked as an actress for several years before turning to directing.

She entered television as a BBC director in 1965, working on 30 Minute Theatre, Sunday Afternoon Theatre, Out of Town Theatre, and single plays including The House Mouse and The Lariat. She also devised, wrote, and directed the six-part documentary series Why Would You Believe It?

Going freelance in 1969, she directed for the BBC, Anglia, Granada, and Yorkshire across plays and series such as Boy Meets Girl, Love Story, Coronation Street, Castle Haven, Kate, and Crown Court.

She directed television adaptations of Pollyanna, starring Elaine Stritch, and Johanna Spyri's Heidi, featuring Flora Robson and Kathleen Byron. Heidi received a 1975 Emmy nomination in the United States for best television serial.

From 1976 she worked almost exclusively for Granada Television, producing the Victorian detective series Cribb and the supernatural anthology Shades of Darkness, among other drama.

Wyndham Davies was known for spotting talent early. She gave Michael Caine an early theatre chance and later provided opportunities for Rhys Ifans, Keeley Hawes, and Hugh Grant.

At Granada she suggested Jeremy Brett for the title role in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. She produced The Return of Sherlock Holmes, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1994), and feature-length films including The Sign of Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Master Blackmailer, often working with screenwriter Jeremy Paul.

As co-producer with Pippa Cross of the film August, starring and directed by Anthony Hopkins, she won the BAFTA Wales award for Best Drama in 1997. She also wrote short stories and plays, including Green Shutters.

Wyndham Davies died in Spain on 9 September 2026, aged 97. The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast reported that her transition was peaceful and that she was with loved ones. Sherlockian outlets including I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere published tributes.

She is remembered as a bridge between BBC studio drama and Granada period television, as a producer who trusted Brett's Holmes, and as a mentor who opened doors for younger actors across decades of British screen work.
