Early life

Born Carlos Ray Norris, March 10, 1940, Ryan, Oklahoma, to Wilma Lee Scarberry Norris (1921-2024) and Ray Dee Norris (1918-1971). Irish ancestry on his mother's side; German and British on his father's. Oldest of three brothers: Wieland (1943-1970) and Aaron. Parents divorced when he was 16; family moved to Prairie Village, Kansas, then Torrance, California. Childhood self-described as shy and non-athletic amid financial hardship and his father's drinking. Brother Wieland predicted he would not live past 27 and was killed in Vietnam in June 1970 while serving with the 101st Airborne.

Education

Attended North High School in Torrance, California, where he was a classmate of future first wife Dianne Kay Holechek. No widely cited college degree in major obituaries; formative education after high school was United States Air Force service (1958-1962) and intensive martial-arts training in Korea and California. Opened karate schools while working rather than a conventional university path.

Martial arts breakthrough (1958-1971)

USAF Air Policeman at Osan AB (Korea) and March AFB (California); discharged August 1962, airman first class. Began Tang Soo Do in Korea; later earned multiple black belts and founded American Tang Soo Do and the Chuck Norris System / Chun Kuk Do. Legacy and impact

Helped establish a mainstream American martial-arts action-hero template after the 1970s Hong Kong kung-fu wave. Walker, Texas Ranger kept his moral-loner persona in living rooms for eight seasons. Kickstart Kids brought karate-based character education into Texas schools. Chuck Norris facts made him a defining early-internet meme, which he largely embraced. Honorary Marine (2007), honorary Texas Ranger (2010), Hollywood Walk of…

Controversies (documented only)

Documented public flashpoints: political columns and endorsements that polarized audiences (birther-adjacent 2009 letter; Prop 8 support; anti-Sharia series); 2007-2008 lawsuit against Penguin USA over a Chuck Norris facts book (later withdrawn); 2019 Glock endorsement criticized by some fans; earlier extramarital relationship resulting in daughter Dina (acknowledged in memoir). Family later condemned AI-generated misinformation about his death circumstances (April 2026).
