He was America's dad for a reason. Not because he was perfect, but because he was kind, and he worked for it every day. Gone too soon at 65.

Philadelphia roots and a childhood on the move

Robert Lane Saget was born 17 May 1956 in Philadelphia to Rosalyn and Benjamin Saget in a Jewish family marked by premature sibling losses. Early moves took him to Norfolk, Virginia (Lake Taylor High School; Temple Israel synagogue humor), Encino in Los Angeles (where he met Larry Fine), and back to the Philadelphia area, graduating from Abington Senior High School. He originally aimed at medicine until an Honors English teacher pushed him toward performance.

Temple University film school and early clubs

Saget studied film at Temple University, creating Through Adam's Eyes and receiving a Student Academy Award of merit. He graduated with a BA in 1978. While in school he took the train to New York to work clubs such as The Improv and Catch a Rising Star. A brief attempt at graduate study at the University of Southern California ended…

Full House, AFV, HIMYM, and blue stand-up

After CBS's The Morning Program (1987), Saget starred as Danny Tanner on Full House (1987-1995) and later Fuller House (2016-2020). He hosted America's Funniest Home Videos (1989-1997; anniversary return 2009), narrated future Ted on How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014), hosted 1 vs. 100, directed For Hope and Dirty Work, released specials including That Ain't Right and Zero to Sixty,…

Marriages, daughters, and scleroderma advocacy

Saget married Sherri Kramer in 1982. They had three daughters (Aubrey, Lara, and Jennifer) and divorced in 1997. He married Kelly Rizzo in 2018. His sister Gay died of scleroderma. He served on the Scleroderma Research Foundation board and used celebrity platforms to raise awareness and funds. Close friendships with Full House co-stars, especially John Stamos and Dave Coulier, were…

Humor as survival, and two comedy selves

Raised Jewish, Saget often linked comedy to surviving family loss. In Dirty Daddy he credited his father's philosophy after grief: try to bring joy because life is hard and ends. He rejected the idea that his clean TV image and blue stand-up were a contradiction to hide. He described both as genuine, writing that he worked radically diverse creative worlds…

America's Dad, club comic, and charity aftershock

Saget helped define late-1980s and 1990s family sitcom warmth as Danny Tanner, pioneered viral home-video television as AFV's original host, and gave How I Met Your Mother its framing voice. Contemporaries stressed kindness as much as jokes. After his death, the Scleroderma Research Foundation reported thousands of memorial donations and a major matching grant. Netflix's Dirty Daddy tribute and ongoing…

Student Oscar merit, Grammy nod, and industry respect

Student Academy Award of merit for Through Adam's Eyes. Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album for That's What I'm Talkin' About (2014). He did not win that Grammy. Long-running prime-time success rather than a shelf of competitive Emmys defined his television peak. A Sardi's caricature was unveiled on 4 January 2008 during his Broadway stint in The Drowsy Chaperone. Board…

Documented tensions, not a scandal ledger

No major criminal scandal. Documented flashpoints include the deliberate shock of his blue stand-up versus family-TV branding (often framed by Saget himself), mixed-to-poor contemporary reviews for Dirty Work, and the family's successful 2022 court effort to permanently block release of additional graphic investigative materials after the medical examiner ruling (privacy, not a disputed manner of death). These are documented media…

Florida tour stop, accidental head trauma

On 9 January 2022, after performing in Ponte Vedra Beach the previous evening, Saget was found unresponsive in his Ritz-Carlton hotel room in Orange County, Florida, and pronounced dead at age 65. Family and medical examiner statements established accidental blunt head trauma from an unwitnessed fall, with death in sleep from the resulting injuries. COVID-19 testing was positive but was not the cause. Toxicology was negative for illicit drugs and alcohol. Funeral 14 January 2022. Burial at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery, Los Angeles.
