Didn't know much about him until this story but sticking with that election petition to the end says something about the man.

Charles Matovu was a Ugandan electrical engineer and opposition politician who served as Member of Parliament for Busiro South, in Wakiso District, during the 11th Parliament from 2021 to 2026. A member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) led by Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, he died suddenly in October 2026 at the age of 41, while still contesting in court the result of the election that had cost him his seat.
According to his official profile on the Parliament of Uganda website, Matovu was born on 1 April 1985 and trained as an electrical engineer. Little else about his early life and family has been made public.
Matovu stood for Busiro South on the NUP ticket in the January 2021 general election, part of the wave of young opposition candidates that the then new party fielded across Buganda. Busiro South, which stretches from Nkumba to the islands of Bussi and Sissa on Lake Victoria, had been held by the National Resistance Movement's Peter Ssematimba, and the 2021 race also drew Democratic Party and independent challengers. Matovu won the seat and took it into the 11th Parliament. In the House he sat on the Committee on Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries and on the Committee on Climate Change, matters of direct concern to a lakeside and island constituency.
He sought a second term in the general election of 15 January 2026. The campaign was tense: in December 2025 NUP reported that men alleged to be in security uniforms had attacked Matovu and his campaign team while they canvassed in the constituency, and that the injured were treated at Mengo Hospital. The Electoral Commission declared the NRM candidate Kenan Opio the winner with 36,497 votes to Matovu's 30,487. Matovu rejected the result and petitioned the High Court in Entebbe, alleging irregularities and non-compliance with electoral laws. On 25 September 2026 the court dismissed a side application for access to further electoral materials, and Justice Johnson Karemani began hearing the main petition on 16 October 2026.
Three days later, on the night of Monday 19 October, Matovu fell suddenly ill and was admitted to Lubaga Hospital in Kampala. NUP secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya visited him on the morning of Thursday 22 October and found him critically ill, unable to speak or open his eyes. He was transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he died later that day. The cause of death was not made public. Kyagulanyi called the news very shocking and described him as a brother, comrade and fellow leader.
Matovu is remembered as one of the generation of opposition legislators who entered Parliament with NUP in 2021, and his death left open the fate of the Busiro South election petition he had pursued to the end.
