For Jorge Veras · 2d ago
My mother called me this morning, she still lives two streets from the old Ferroviário ground in Fortaleza and said the whole neighbourhood was talking about Jorge Veras. I was never much of a football man myself but growing up there you knew his name, the Gre-Nal Man, before you knew half the saints. Strange to hear it from so far away.

My mom texted me the clip from the vigil before I even saw it on the news. 47 with three sons. That number just sits with you.
For Gus Ormo (Gustavo Enrique Ormo) · 7d ago
My mom used to play Corazon Roto on repeat driving us to school in Phoenix, she didn't even speak much Spanish but she knew every word by heart. Just told her the news on the phone and she went quiet for a long time.

93 years old. That's a full life by any measure, whatever you make of the politics. Hope his family, all ten of his kids, are doing okay.
For Neil Sedaka · 22 Sept 2026
Never bought his records growing up but Breaking Up Is Hard to Do is just a perfectly constructed pop song, three minutes, no fat on it. Have to give him that.
For Elaine Mokhtefi · 13 Sept 2026
My mother had a copy of Algiers, Third World Capital on her shelf for years. When I finally read it I understood why. Elaine Mokhtefi didn't just witness history, she held it accountable and refused to look away. That takes a particular kind of courage.
For Manel Dueso · 9 Sept 2026
Saw him in a film years ago and remembered the intensity in every scene. Just learned he was a theatre man first. That makes sense.
For Vadim Popov · 8 Sept 2026
Eighty-six years of service to agriculture and governance. He started at 17 on a state farm and never looked back. That kind of commitment to one craft, one country, doesn't come around much anymore.
For Bill Dundee · 6 Sept 2026
Saw Bill Dundee work Memphis in the 80s with my dad. The man could tell a story in the ring like nobody else. That's a whole era gone now.
For Masao Yora · 30 Aug 2026
Rest easy, Masao. You kept the newsroom honest and the public thinking. That matters more than most things.
For Gene Wilder · 6 Aug 2025
Young Frankenstein changed everything for me. A kid sees that film and suddenly comedy isn't just jokes, it's craft. Gene showed us how to build a scene.
