My mom used to play Corazon Roto on repeat driving us to school in Phoenix, she didn't even speak much Spanish but she knew every word by heart. Just told her the news on the phone and she went quiet for a long time.

Gustavo Enrique Ormo, known professionally as Gus Ormo, was a Venezuelan singer, songwriter and pianist whose romantic ballads built him a dedicated following among Spanish speaking audiences in the United States and Latin America. Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, he later settled in Miami, Florida, where he built his recording career and became a visible figure in the Venezuelan expatriate community.
Ormo wrote and performed in the pop rock and romantic ballad traditions, drawing explicitly on the work of poets such as Pablo Neruda, Mario Benedetti and Jaime Sabines for inspiration. He called himself the "Prince of Music" and built a catalogue centred on themes of love, longing and reconciliation. His 2025 album Alquimia, a nine track project centred on love, passion and sensuality, produced the widely shared single "Corazon Roto," which reportedly amassed more than 43 million views on Facebook, while the video for another ballad, "100 Suspiros," surpassed 8 million views. Earlier in 2026 he released "Venezuela," a tribute song centred on themes of reconciliation and unity among Venezuelans living abroad.
His most ambitious work, the instrumental album Agape, was released in the weeks before his death. Described in an October 1 press release as a conceptual, instrumental and intimate album marking a milestone in his career, it reportedly took 12 years to develop and featured collaborations with the Grammy winning saxophonist Ed Calle and bassist Carlitos del Puerto. The project showcased Ormo's jazz and classical piano training and marked a shift away from the vocal ballads that had made him known.
Ormo mattered to his audience as a romantic songwriter who gave voice to the experience of displacement and longing felt by many Venezuelans who, like him, had left their country. His songs about reconciliation and emotional connection resonated widely on social media even as mainstream recognition in the broader Latin music industry remained limited.
Ormo was found dead on the morning of Friday, October 16, 2026, in the swimming pool of a home he owned in the Weston Hills community of Weston, Florida. The Broward Sheriff's Office received a report of a possible drowning and found him submerged face down in the backyard pool, with a long cord or cable reported near the body. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. What began as a drowning call was reclassified by BSO Homicide and Crime Scene units as a suspicious death, though authorities have not said why, and the medical examiner's office has not yet released a cause of death. His sister, Antonieta Ormo, confirmed his death to CBS Miami and said the family knew little about what may have happened.
