William Cruickshanks was born on October 24, 1943, in Angus, Scotland, and raised in Melbourne, Australia. At sixteen he joined the circus as a trapeze artist (and, in his own later telling to Slam Wrestling, also as an animal handler). He began professional wrestling in Australia in 1962. By the late 1960s he was working for Jim Barnett's NWA-affiliated Australian promotion; he later described quitting a refrigerator-factory day job when wrestling became his full living.
In 1974 he arrived in the United States with tag partner George Barnes, landing in Nashville for Nick Gulas and billing himself Superstar Bill Dundee. He soon became a fixture of the Memphis territory under Jerry Jarrett's Continental Wrestling Association and related Mid-America / USWA lineage. There he regularly teamed and feuded with Jerry The King Lawler and also worked programs with Jimmy Valiant, Buddy Landel, Tommy Rich, Eddie Gilbert, and many others. Their Lawler-Dundee rivalry and partnership ran for decades: hair matches, loser-leaves-town matches, cage matches, and the famous Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl with Lawler against the Blond Bombers. Dundee held the AWA Southern Heavyweight Championship multiple times (Wikipedia lists nine reigns) between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s, plus a long list of Southern tag titles with partners including Lawler, Tommy Rich, Steve Keirn, Dutch Mantel, and others.
In 1987 Dundee and Lawler captured the AWA World Tag Team Championship twice through the AWA-CWA working relationship. Outside Memphis he had runs in Mid-South Wrestling, Jim Crockett Promotions / NWA Central States and Florida (1986), where he teamed with Jimmy Garvin, feuded for the NWA Central States Heavyweight Championship with Sam Houston, and briefly managed The Barbarian and The MOD Squad. In 1993-1994 he appeared in World Championship Wrestling as Sir William, manager of Lord Steven Regal; Wikipedia states he was fired in October 1994 amid a contract dispute. He also booked for Memphis, Louisiana, and Georgia territories and later promoted independent cards in Tennessee and Southaven, Mississippi.
As an author he published If You Don't Want the Answer, Don't Ask the Question: Bill Dundee's Life Story (with Memphis historian Mark James and others; about 2011-2012). He appeared on Jackson, Tennessee radio WNWS 101.5 with Dan Reeves, on West Tennessee public-access television, and hosted a podcast under the same title as his book on Anchor. On July 20, 2019, at age 75, he defeated Tony Deppen to win the WOMBAT Television Championship for Game Changer Wrestling in Tullahoma, Tennessee. He retired from wrestling on December 14, 2019.
Family life intertwined with the business: son Jamie Dundee became a wrestler; daughter Donna married Midnight Express star Bobby Eaton in 1981 (Donna died 2021; Eaton died 2021). Dundee and Beverly divorced in 1988 after a long relationship; Beverly, who wrote a foreword to his book as his ex-wife, died in 2016. On September 7, 2023, Jamie told Story Time with Dutch Mantell that his father was living with late-stage dementia.
Bill Dundee died on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at age 82. His son Jamie announced on Facebook that he passed at 3:30 a.m., writing that with a heavy heart he had to say the Superstar had passed and closing, I love you Dad. I'll catch you on the OTHERSIDE (quoted by NoDQ.com). No cause of death was made public. Only weeks earlier, on August 21, 2026, he had appeared with Lawler, Jimmy Hart and others at a Tupelo SuperShow benefiting St. Jude, and on August 23 at Memphis Wrestling WrestleCenter. He was inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame (Class of 2017) and ranked with Lawler among Pro Wrestling Illustrated's top tag teams of the PWI Years (No. 56, 2003).
