Only came across his OpenMP office hours talks last year, long after I'd retired from my own engineering work, and wished I'd found them sooner. My grandson showed me a recording on his laptop in our kitchen in Tacoma. Thirty six. That stopped me more than it should have for a man I never knew.

A film society screening at Georgetown in '78 is where I first saw Harry Hooton, some grad student had gotten a print from somewhere. Eighty three minutes and I didn't understand half of it but I never forgot the sound. 88 years old. That's a full life, whatever else it was.

The Quiet Beatle found God in a sitar and shared it with the rest of us. That takes courage.

Went to see him in a play once in the '90s and thought, that guy is either going to be huge or disappear. He got huge. Then he got real quiet about it. That took guts.
