My comparative lit professor at Illinois assigned Ordinea iubirii in the Canadian edition back in 2023, and I still have my copy full of notes. Read the news on my phone in a parking lot and just sat there a minute. Never met him, never even emailed him, but his book changed how I read Robinson Crusoe for good.

Never followed Swiss cantonal politics but I stayed in Sierre once for a work trip and asked a local about the town's history, he brought up de Chastonay and the 1972 merger with Granges without me even asking. Ninety five is a long run. Not someone I knew of before, but making a town bigger and keeping it functional is no small thing.

Pilgrim at Tinker Creek changed how I see a walk in the woods. Twenty years later I still think about her attention to detail, the way she made you feel like looking closely at the world was a sacred act.
