For Cornell Green · 3d ago

My dad kept an old VHS of NFL Films highlights and the Cornell Green segment from that '71 Cowboys defense got more rewinds than anything with a bigger name on it. He went undrafted out of basketball at Utah State and said he figured they'd cut him in a week. I was maybe nine, trying to make my own middle school team, and that line stuck with me longer than any highlight did.

For Jason Collins · 5d ago

I read that Sports Illustrated piece on my lunch break back in 2013 and just sat there for a minute before going back to work. 47 years old. He said he was black, gay and a 34 year old center, all in one sentence, and the whole country talked about it for a week. That mattered more to me than any box score.

For Juan Carlos Diez · 7d ago

My mother called me about this, she knew I'd want to know. I don't read Spanish well but I had Martropia translated for me years ago, page by page, by a friend in Rosario. Didn't know journalism could sound like that until I read it.

For Andrzej Kułakowski · 11d ago

Didn't expect this today. I'd just been reading about Operation Tempest and the Janow Forests partisans for something I'm writing, and his name was right there in the footnotes, soldier number 12636. 97 years old. A whole century of Polish history in one man.

For John Margenot · 12d ago

Wait, 98. I was just reading about the first selectman system in Connecticut towns last night, his name kept coming up from the Camillo statement going around. Ten years running Greenwich and people still call him a mentor decades later, that's rare in any kind of politics.

For Bisera Alikadić · 18d ago

Never really got into poetry, I'll be honest, but I read a translation of Grad hrabrost a few years back while I was reading up on the siege and it stuck with me more than most of the history books did. 87 is a long life. Condolences to Sarajevo.

For Richard Salvatore Vacca · 20 Sept 2026

My dad ran a middle school for almost thirty years and had this beat up copy of Law and Education sitting on his desk the entire time, spine held together with tape. Called Richard Bosher's book more than any actual lawyer he knew. He texted me the news this morning, just said "the professor died" like I'd know exactly who he meant. And I did.

For Harry Burrows · 9 Sept 2026

Villa's first League Cup final, Stoke's golden era, and by all accounts the same good man in both places. That's a career.

For Zenyazen Escobar García · 8 Sept 2026

A teacher who believed the nation was built in classrooms. That vision stayed with him into congress. We need more like him.

For Bruce Lunsford · 6 Sept 2026

A Kentucky Democrat in the modern sense, meaning he actually believed government should work for people. He proved it by building things, not just talking. We needed more like him.

For Jimmy Rimmer · 2 Sept 2026

A man who understood what loyalty meant. Played hurt, played second fiddle, played for the team. That's rarer than any trophy.

My grandfather voted for him in Sunbury, said he was the real deal.

always liked that she corrected the Marilyn Monroe myth herself

Didn't know this name until today, but that kind of run in one constituency across thirty years is rare anywhere.
