so my neighbor who's from Reykjavik lent me Loftmynd on a cassette she still had, years ago, and I didn't understand a word of it but something about his voice made me sit in my car in the driveway till the whole thing finished. I looked up the lyrics later in English, the ones about Snorri Sturluson, and I remember thinking this man is making fun of his own country's saints and somehow that felt more loving than any anthem. I just read he died at 81 in a nursing home in Reykjavik and I keep thinking about my neighbor, I should call her. anyway. 1987. that album. edit: she already knew, she called me first actually

Never read much New Zealand history, not my usual shelf, but I looked up Makers of Fortune once for a research rabbit hole and it was genuinely well written for something so niche. 103 is a whole life. Didn't know him really but that stuck with me.

my dad just texted me a blurry pic of some guy in face paint from the 90s and said "metal maniac is gone" like I was supposed to know who that was. he explained for ten minutes. he sounded so sad about Snuka too, some feud from before I was born.

My dad called me at six this morning just to tell me, he's had that Chalke book about Ken Taylor on his shelf for years and used to read bits out loud at breakfast. Never thought I'd know a Yorkshire cricketer's name living out here, but I did because of him.

My roommate in college used to play Death Disco sets off some old Soundcloud rip while we cleaned the apartment, that's how I found out about him at all, half a world away in Louisiana. Just saw the news on my phone at the kitchen table and told her first. Weird to feel this about someone I never could've met, but those sets got us through a lot of Sunday mornings.

My dad had his books on the shelf next to the window. He'd point at the Moon and say Don Wilhelms knew every inch of it. I'm so glad he got to see that work outlast him.
