My uncle died of liver cancer three years ago, fifteen days in the hospital too, and reading this took the wind out of me a little. Never met Mushtaq Khan, only knew him from Welcome, he made that whole movie funnier just by being in it. 56 is nothing.

my roommate in grad school was really into Russian pop and she'd play me clips of him on Superstar, subtitles half broken, and he still made me laugh at some kid butchering a note. 58. that's no age at all.

I watched a true crime special on this case with my sister back in the 2000s and it stuck with me ever since, that jury said life and a judge overrode it anyway. 49 years old. Hard to know what to feel today.

We were born the same year. I saw him once on a documentary about Beijing rock in the 90s and never forgot that voice, the raw honesty of it. He asked if there was hope and made you feel like the question mattered. Rest well.
