The Hong Kong Coliseum footage is still the best document of what Chinese rock was at its peak. He gave everything that night. Gone too soon.

I only knew his work through a friend's translation of the lyrics, but something about the question 'Is there any hope?' stayed with me for years. He sounded like he meant it.

We were born the same year. I saw him once on a documentary about Beijing rock in the 90s and never forgot that voice, the raw honesty of it. He asked if there was hope and made you feel like the question mattered. Rest well.

My father played his records in the car when I was small. He Yong's voice always sounded like someone telling the truth when nobody else would. Thinking of him and his father today.

He Yong's 1994 Hong Kong Coliseum performance stands as one of the defining live documents of mainland rock's emergence. A young man in a sailor shirt calling his father to the stage with the sanxian, refusing the polish of Cantopop spectacle. That image will endure.

Early life in Beijing

He Yong was born in Beijing on 1969-02-15 into a four-generation home. His father He Yusheng was a professional sanxian player with the China Song and Dance Ensemble, and He began systematic music study around age five or six. As a child actor he appeared in the 1980 children's film Four Little Friends. ZH Wikipedia notes strong school aversion in junior high; he left formal education after graduating junior high and did not continue academic study.

Education

Formal schooling ended at junior high (初中) per ZH Wikipedia. Musical education came primarily from his father and from the Beijing underground rock circuit rather than a conservatory diploma. Guitar study began around age fifteen.

Mayday, underground Beijing, and the Moyan breakthrough

In 1987 he joined Beijing band Mayday and performed for student protesters in 1989. He moved in the same underground networks as Cui Jian and Dou Wei. After a 1991 signing to Dadi Records noted in Chinese tribute coverage, 1994 brought the move to Moyan Culture and the release of Garbage Dump, which paired metal-punk fury with folk and national-instrument…

Hong Kong Coliseum, 17 December 1994

The Rock China Music Power concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum with Dou Wei, Zhang Chu and Tang Dynasty became the defining live image of mainland rock's mid-1990s crest. He Yong's sailor shirt, red scarf, Cantopop provocation, and onstage introduction of father He Yusheng on sanxian (with Dou Wei on flute) are retold in almost every major obituary. He later…

Personal life and health

Public sources document a deep bond with father He Yusheng (died 2024), who accompanied him on 《钟鼓楼》 at Hong Kong and at later revival shows. Spouse and children are not named in EN/ZH Wikipedia or the major 2026 obituaries checked for this brief; treat as not made public. From the mid-1990s he struggled with depression, alcoholism, and later psychiatric illness…

Beliefs and artistic views

He styled himself a punk and prized unvarnished expression over industry polish. Pre-Hong Kong comments dismissing most Cantopop Heavenly Kings as entertainers rather than musicians show his contempt for what he saw as empty showbiz. On art he told Chinese media: life may be imperfect, but art exists so people can create perfect things, such as a perfect song that…

Legacy and impact

One album and one Coliseum night proved enough to stamp a generation. 《垃圾场》, 《钟鼓楼》 and 《姑娘漂亮》 remain playlist fixtures; the sailor-shirt-and-red-scarf image is endlessly copied. With Dou Wei and Zhang Chu he marks the Magic Stone year that Chinese rock historians treat as an idealistic high-water mark before commercial pop reasserted itself. Documentary Goodbye Utopia and Gao Yuan's photo book…

Awards and honours

Chinese coverage notes that 《钟鼓楼》 won a Beijing Music Radio top-ten golden song honour for 1994. Broader mainland award-show history is thin because of later blacklisting from large Beijing stages after the Li Suli incident. Major honour is cultural canonisation rather than a long trophy shelf.

Controversies

Documented: (1) 1994 Hong Kong press attack on Cantopop Heavenly Kings and Jacky Cheung's reported retort. (2) 1996 Capital Indoor Stadium remark to Li Suli, followed by official criticism and exclusion from large Beijing stages. (3) 2002 apartment fire / self-harm incident, detention, and compulsory psychiatric hospitalisation. (4) 2015 reported knife assault and rearrest (ZH Wikipedia; NetEase/Xinhua contemporaneous). Presented as…

Death

Died 2026-09-01 in Beijing, aged 57. The Paper confirmed via industry sources on 2026-09-04; China News, DotDotNews, Jiemian, Sina/Yangtze Evening and EN Wikipedia concur. Cause of death not made public. Zhang Chu's tribute stressed sincerity and stubbornness. He Yusheng had died in 2024. Resting place not published in sources checked for this brief.
