My mother taped the Luke and Laura wedding on our Betamax in 1981 and made us all watch it after Sunday dinner like it was scripture. 78 years old. That's a long run for a man who was only supposed to be on that show thirteen weeks.

Never knew her, just came across the obituary notice this morning doing family history searches for a distant Miller line. That line about going home to be with the Lord, and naming her grandmother Mary Ann Adcock right there with her folks who'd gone before her. Seventy seven years in Prattville. Something plain and solid about that.

Little, Big is one of those books that rewires you. Reread it every few years and it's still doing things I don't fully understand, which I take as a sign of real work.
