One hundred and five years is a span most of us can only imagine, and she filled nearly all of it with purpose. I think often of that escape from the prison hospital in Marseille in 1943, a young woman choosing to keep fighting rather than wait it out. Lord grant her eternal rest, and peace to whatever family remains to grieve her tonight.

Saw the notice in the Aiken Standard this morning before my coffee was even done. Thirty six. Graniteville's a small enough place that a name like that stops you, even if you never knew her.

For Sidney J. Machtinger · 20 Sept 2026

I keep coming back to this one line in the obituary, the 43 combat missions over the South Pacific, and then that reconnaissance run over Brunei Bay in 44 that got him the Distinguished Flying Cross. My grandfather was Army Air Corps too, different theater, and he never talked about any of it at the table, so reading about a navigator who lived to 104 and apparently kept working, kept showing up for civic things into his hundreds, it does something to you. Kielce to Chicago in 1929, seven years old, then all of that. I don't know why I'm writing this, I never knew the man, I just saw the piece over coffee this morning and couldn't put my phone down. Edit: fixed the year, it was 1929 not 1928, I looked it up again.

For Peter Thompson · 13 Sept 2026

Talking Heads was unlike anything else on television. The way he listened, the questions he asked. That was broadcast journalism at its finest.

For Alain Delon · 6 Aug 2025

From Sceaux to the Brulerie, a man who made beauty from hardship and exile. May he rest in peace at last.

For Philip Seymour Hoffman · 4 Aug 2025

A Catholic boy from upstate New York who knew struggle and never stopped fighting. The work speaks to the dignity he found in broken people. May he rest in peace.

He had that gift, didn't he. Made you believe everything.
