Francesc Garrido was one of those Catalan actors other actors wanted nearby: precise, magnetic, and allergic to the star system. Born in Barcelona on December 26, 1969 (La Vanguardia later noted that many online biographies wrongly listed September 7, 1969, and that he joked about being congratulated on the wrong day), he grew up between a Madrid-born father who had come to Catalonia to study the merchant marine and a mother who worked as a nurse. His father died in a traffic accident when Francesc was still a child (accounts vary between about ages 10 and 12). Cinema became what he later called his "church." Sunday double bills in a Barcelona neighbourhood cinema, and especially David Lean's Ryan's Daughter with Robert Mitchum, stayed with him as the fiercest memory of childhood. Theatre took over when he entered Barcelona's Institut del Teatre; he later refined his craft at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).
He debuted on stage around 1990 (Alfons Quart) and soon became a Lliure and TNC regular under directors including Calixto Bieito, Lluis Pasqual, Alex Rigola, and Carme Portaceli. Shakespeare, Chekhov, Ibsen, Mamet, Bulgakov: he treated classical and contemporary text with the same sober intensity. Early Lliure work alongside Eduard Fernandez (a favourite colleague) in Amfitrio and La tempesta set a pattern. Decades later he was still deepening that stage identity: Glengarry Glen Ross with Rigola (2024), then Satan in Rigola's El mestre i Margarita at the Teatre Lliure (2025-26 season).
Television made him familiar far beyond Catalonia. After Estacio d'enllac (1996-1999) he moved through Los hombres de Paco, Gran Reserva (as Pablo Cortazar), El tiempo entre costuras (comisario Claudio Vazquez opposite Adriana Ugarte), Isabel, Se quien eres (lead Juan Elias, amnesia thriller with Blanca Portillo), La sala (inspector Yago Costa), Dias de Navidad, Jaguar, La novia gitana / La red purpura (forensic Buendia), and Clanes. Film credits include La ciudad de los prodigios (screen debut under Mario Camus), Smoking Room (shared Silver Biznaga for best actor, Malaga 2002), Te doy mis ojos, Amenabar's Oscar-winning Mar adentro, Alatriste (Martin Saldana), 25 kilates, Stella cadente / Falling Star, L'adopcio, and, in 2026, Balandrau, vent salvatge and El anfitrion alongside Willem Dafoe and Carlos Cuevas.
Off camera he was private. He married actress and Institut del Teatre voice and acting teacher Merce Marine (they met on the Institut stairs). They had one daughter, Joana. He spoke rarely about them; in a 2017 Diez Minutos interview he called himself a mimoso y consentidor father and said Joana preferred ballet to theatre. He kept Gelida and especially Vilaplana as places to walk, cook, swim, and prepare roles away from premiere pressure. Colleagues repeatedly described the same person: generous, unique, calming presence, distinctive voice (even used in a Sagrada Familia campaign).
He died of a heart attack / cardiac problem on the evening of August 30, 2026 (news confirmed August 31), aged 56. Tributes came from the Academia del Cinema Catala, Union de Actores y Actrices, Catalan president Salvador Illa, and castmates including Adriana Ugarte, Blanca Portillo, Paula Echevarria, Pepon Nieto, and Armando del Rio. Unreleased or pending work included Sira (returning as Vazquez) and Movistar+ series Todo lo necesario. His legacy is the long, craftsmanlike arc of a Catalan essential: theatre-first, screen-beloved, never loud about himself.
