Never knew him, just read this piece over breakfast, but 36 years in special education without ever being famous for it is its own kind of record.

My wife read this out to me over breakfast, the bit about surveying bridges for twenty six years and still building houses after. Sixty two years married is its own achievement. Never met the man, never been to Spokane, but that sort of steady life deserves a line somewhere.

78. Quietly done, a life of teaching and family.

Never read him in Slovene, only knew of him through the book world pages, but Slovene PEN's line stays with me: a writer with "a sharp, critical pen, often seasoned with humour." That's the whole obituary really.

Followed West Java politics from an armchair in Manchester since the World Service report on his 2003 election. Didn't expect to read about his death at 81 over coffee this morning.

A geographer who understood that tourism wasn't destiny, just a question. Not many politicians asked who the islands were actually for.

Smoking Room. Enough said. One of the best ensemble casts ever assembled, and he was the quiet centre of it all. Barcelona loses a craftsman.
