Followed West Java politics from an armchair in Manchester since the World Service report on his 2003 election. Didn't expect to read about his death at 81 over coffee this morning.

Danny Setiawan (28 August 1945 - 19 September 2026) was an Indonesian civil servant and politician who served as governor of West Java from 2003 to 2008. He died in Bandung on the morning of 19 September 2026 at the age of 81, after a period of declining health. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi announced the news and later helped lead funeral rites; Setiawan was buried the same day in his family cemetery at Desa Ciwareng, Babakancikao, Purwakarta, beside his mother Juwita, as he had wished.
Born on 28 August 1945 and raised across West Java as his soldier father was posted from place to place, he finished elementary school in Cirebon, middle school in Bogor, and high school in Purwakarta. He graduated in 1968 from the Interior Government Academy (APDN) in Bandung and began a long career in local administration: first as an adjutant to the regent in Lebak Regency, then in Manokwari, then back in Lebak for more than a decade before joining the West Java provincial government in Bandung by 1984. He headed several provincial departments and in 1998 became provincial secretary (sekda), a post he held until 2003.
In May 2003 Golkar backed him for governor against PDI-P-supported retired Major General Tayo Tarmadi. The West Java Regional People's Representative Council elected Setiawan with 49 of 88 votes; he took office on 13 June 2003, succeeding Nana Nuriana. His five-year term covered the transition toward direct gubernatorial elections. He sought re-election in 2008 but finished last of three candidates behind Ahmad Heryawan and Agum Gumelar.
After leaving office, Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named him a suspect in July 2008 over firetruck procurement during his governorship. He was detained in November 2008, sentenced in June 2009 to four years in prison and a Rp 100 million fine, and released on parole in February 2011. That conviction remains part of the public record of his career alongside his earlier work as sekda and governor.
Survivors include his wife, Rinania Sastrawiguna, and four children: Renny Dewi Pratami, Anny Dewi Lasmiani, Rio Teguh Pribadi, and Winny Citra Dewi Utami. Current and former West Java officials, including Dedi Mulyadi, Ahmad Heryawan, Bey Machmudin, and former Bandung mayor Dada Rosada, recalled him as a seasoned bureaucrat whose provincial service left a lasting mark on Jawa Barat.
