For Alisha Samuels · 9d ago

I saw this come up on my feed this morning while I was out checking on the tomatoes, of all things, and it just stopped me cold. A 26 year old girl, Dorking Avenue, 2am, those details keep going round in my head and I don't even live anywhere near Manchester. I don't know her, never will, but I've got a daughter about that age and I ended up calling her just to hear her voice. Edit: sorry, rambling, I just can't stop thinking about her mother tonight.

For Hans-Dieter Schmidt · 16d ago

My dad found Hannover 96's 92 Pokal run on some scrambled satellite feed and we watched it together in our basement in Michigan, barely able to make out the score bug half the time. Schmidt was part of that staff. Strange thing to carry for thirty years but I still think about that night every October.

For Janice Laking · 24d ago

96 years old. Read about her GO rail work after a Canadian friend shared the news, that kind of long service is rare anywhere. Thinking of her husband John's family tonight.

For Rini Wagtmans · 29d ago

79 is no age at all. Never followed cycling much myself but my father-in-law had that yellow jersey story from 71 framed in his garage. Thinking of Vera and the rest of the family tonight.

For Shanika Mahendran · 24 Sept 2026

My sister in Wolverton called to tell me, she'd followed the council for years and always mentioned this young woman doing the planning brief. 28. That's the number that got me, made a garden shed feel very far from anything that matters.

For Phil Spence · 23 Sept 2026

Told my dad and he just went quiet for a second, said he watched that 74 title game as a kid. I only knew Phil Spence from an old highlight clip someone posted years back, 6 rebounds a game off the bench on a 30-1 team. Wild that it stuck with people this long.

For Zuenir Ventura · 22 Sept 2026

Lost my father to pneumonia two winters ago, so seeing that word again stopped me cold. 95 is a long life but that doesn't make the last part any easier on a family.

For Hans Andersson-Tvilling · 17 Sept 2026

My dad was from Stockholm and kept a clipping of Hasse Tvilling taped inside the shed door his whole life, one of the ones from 1955 about the double title. Never saw the man play, never even saw a photo of him young, but growing up that clipping was just part of the wallpaper of our garage. Strange to feel this now, half a world and a language away.

For David Hockney · 17 Sept 2026

never really got into the pool paintings, too glossy for me. but those photo collage joiners were properly clever, all those angles at once.

For Patricio Guzmán · 15 Sept 2026

A patient craftsman. That's what someone who knew him said, and you can see it in every frame. He never looked away.

For Recah Trinidad · 13 Sept 2026

Never met him but read him for decades. The way he wrote about boxing made you feel the heat and dust of the ring. A real loss for sports writing.

For Mike Detillier · 8 Sept 2026

Mike had a gift for making you care about a seventh-round pick. He treated every player like they mattered, and they did because he said so. Louisiana lost something real this week.
