"May Allah grant him Jannah." First time I've heard of Savelugu's MP and that's the line that stuck.

Abdul-Samed Muhamed Gunu, widely known as Somed Gunu, was a Ghanaian politician of the New Patriotic Party who represented the Savelugu constituency in the Northern Region in the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic, from January 2017 to January 2021. He died at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra on Thursday 15 October 2026 after an illness of about two weeks. Parliamentary records give his birth date as 6 April 1966, making him 60, although several first reports gave his age as 57.
Gunu came from Savelugu and attended Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale. He earned a Higher National Diploma in accounting from Tamale Polytechnic in 2000 and a master's degree in NGO management and rural development from the University for Development Studies in 2010. Before entering national politics he worked in development, serving as director of the Kugafong Development Organization, a non-governmental organisation working in education and infrastructure.
In the 2016 general election he became the first New Patriotic Party candidate to win the Savelugu seat, polling 13,334 votes. In Parliament he sat with the majority, and colleagues recalled that he sometimes led Friday prayers at the Parliament mosque. He lost the seat in the 2020 election to Jacob Iddriss Abdulai of the National Democratic Congress and challenged the result at the Tamale High Court, which dismissed his petition in January 2023. In December 2023 he sought the party's nomination again but lost the primary to Fathiya Aziz.
His victory in 2016 was a landmark for his party in Savelugu, a seat that had long been held by its rivals, and it brought a development worker with roots in grassroots NGO projects into national lawmaking. Even after leaving Parliament he remained an active figure in constituency politics, seeking to return to the seat as late as 2023.
Gunu was a Muslim and was married with eight children. The NPP Savelugu Constituency announced his death in a statement calling it a great loss to his family, the party and all who knew him, and asked that he be granted Jannatul Firdaus. In keeping with Islamic custom, arrangements were made to return his body from Accra to the north for burial. Former Kumbungu MP Ras Mubarak remembered him as a humble and kind man, and mourners across the Northern Region shared prayers on social media.
