I didn't know the name until my daughter brought a set back from Rome in the nineties and told me what it cost. Ninety years old. That kind of craftsmanship doesn't get made twice.

Alberto Masotti was an Italian entrepreneur who led La Perla, the Bologna lingerie house founded by his mother, Ada Masotti, from 1981 to 2007. Trained as a doctor, he gave up medicine to join the family business and helped turn a small corsetry workshop into one of the best known luxury lingerie brands in the world. Bologna's mayor called him the "signore della lingerie", the lord of lingerie.
He was born in Bologna on 13 March 1936. In 1960 he graduated in medicine and surgery from the University of Bologna with top marks, but instead of pursuing a career on the wards of the city's Sant'Orsola hospital he chose to work in the atelier his mother had opened in 1954. He later recalled that it was his idea, inspired by a Technicolor film about pearl divers in Hawaii, to rename the business from L'Ape to La Perla.
As president from 1981, Masotti expanded La Perla internationally and broadened it into swimwear, ready to wear and fragrance, while adding labels such as GrigioPerla, Malizia, AnnaClub and Joelle. His wife, Olga Cantelli, designed the collections, and from 1995 their daughter Anna joined the company and later ran its communications. He was made a Cavaliere del Lavoro in 1995, served as vice president of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana and chaired the arbitration board of the luxury association Altagamma.
Weighed down by debt, the family sold control of La Perla in 2007 to the American private equity firm JH Partners. The brand then passed through several owners and long labour disputes before its rescue in 2025 by the American businessman Peter Kern. Masotti did not retire. In 2015 he founded the Fondazione Fashion Research Italy in Bologna, a training, consultancy and exhibition centre for small fashion businesses that holds a digital archive of more than 30,000 textile designs. In 2024 he published a memoir of the company, La nostra Perla, and in 2025 he launched Am.Ai, a start-up applying generative artificial intelligence to the foundation's archive.
Masotti died in Bologna on 23 October 2026, aged 90. No cause of death was made public. La Perla said he had helped transform a Bologna atelier into an internationally celebrated maison, and Mayor Matteo Lepore recalled his support for the company's workers during their campaign to save it.

In their own words
“Qualcuno mi dice che sono matto a fare una cosa così alla mia età. Io invece la considero una scintilla di futuro.”
On launching Am.Ai, quoted by Il Resto del Carlino (Some people tell me I am mad to do something like this at my age. I see it as a spark of the future.)

My mother had one of his slips from the 80s, still perfect stitching
