Anthony Stewart Head, born on 20 February 1954 and died on 1 June 2026, was an English actor and singer whose first home as a performer was musical theatre. Wider fame arrived in Britain during the 1980s, when he played one half of the Gold Blend couple in a series of television advertisements for Nescafé. That romance, told in instalments over a cup of coffee, opened the door to substantial parts in several television series.
To many viewers he would always be Rupert Giles, the watcher in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which he played from 1997 to 2003. He was also the prime minister in Little Britain between 2003 and 2006, Uther Pendragon in Merlin from 2008 to 2012, and Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso from 2020 to 2023.
His warm baritone was just as recognisable as his face, heard in advertising and in voice work such as Herc Shipwright in BBC Radio 4's Cabin Pressure, from 2011 to 2014. On screen he appeared in Persuasion in 2007, in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and The Iron Lady, both released in 2011, and in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters in 2013.
