Anthony A. Roquel, known to Filipino television audiences as Tonette Macho, was an actor and comedian whose career stretched from the late 1970s sitcom boom through a late-career return to the Iskul Bukol universe, and who later spent decades as a born-again Christian speaker and prayer partner. He died on 16 October 2026 at the age of 68, of cancer, according to his niece Nica Gomez-Lorena in a message to GMA News Online.
Roquel became a household name on IBC's Iskul Bukol, the student-life sitcom set at the fictional Wanbol University that ran from 1978 to 1988 and later spun into Book 2 (1988 to 1990). On the show he played Tonette Macho (also spelled Tonette in some cast lists), the flamboyant gay student who was best friend to the class's leading ladies and a comic foil to the Escalera brothers. English Wikipedia's Iskul Bukol entry lists him among the main cast alongside Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, Mely Tagasa (Miss Tapia), Bing Angeles, and others. He reprised Tonette for Iskul Bukol: Book 2 and returned as the character in the 2008 reunion film Iskul Bukol: 20 Years After (The Ungasis and Escaleras Adventure). GMA News Online also noted credits in Ang Panday and other films. Film databases credit him (sometimes as Anthony A. Raquel or Tonette Macho) in titles including Iskul Bukol Freshmen (1980), Darna at Ding (1980), Cover Girl (1981), Tatlo Silang Tatay Ko (1982), Tangga and Chos: Beauty Secret Agents (1990), Ouija (2007), Manay Po 2: Overload (2008), and When I Met U (2009).
In interviews decades later, Roquel described his Tonette years as deliberately outrageous. He told an ABS-CBN Christian Fellowship gathering in July 2015 that the Board of Censors once warned him over skimpy costumes, and that on a personal scale he had lived as a gay man for 32 years from childhood. After Iskul Bukol he worked as a casting director for actress Coney Reyes. In 1991, while stranded in Hong Kong for nine days after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo cut travel home, he prayed to be returned to his family. He and his group were among the first passengers to reach the Philippines afterward. That experience, he said, prepared him to accept Christian faith. "When I accepted Him, I was never the same," he told the fellowship. He preferred to be called Brother Anthony and spoke publicly about leaving homosexual practice, attributing his earlier orientation in part to an absentee father who worked abroad. Those remarks, including a claim that nobody is "born" gay or lesbian and that the devil targets families, were widely reported by Coconuts Manila (republishing ABS-CBNnews.com) and remain controversial.
In later years Roquel shared his testimony on platforms such as The 700 Club Asia and Witness21, describing ministry to children and to people wrestling with same-sex attraction. Family and friends remembered him as a prayer partner to thousands. Niece Ja Roquel-Arreza announced his death on social media with the words, "With faith and love, we share that our dearest, Tito Anthony A. Roquel, has been called home to be with our Lord and Savior on October 16, 2026." Nica Gomez-Lorena, another niece, told GMA he had been "a devoted warrior of Christ, a loving son, a dependable brother, a wonderful uncle, a best friend to most, a prayer partner to thousands," and quoted 2 Timothy 4:7. Creative writer Gina Marissa Tagasa, longtime friend and daughter of Iskul Bukol's Miss Tapia (Mely Tagasa), wrote that she had visited him the previous month and found him still fighting "like a real Warrior," and recalled their motto: "Ang buhay parang comedy lang. Tinatawanan hindi tinatawaran."
A service of thanksgiving and remembrance was set to begin on 17 October 2026 at 3 p.m. at Venice Premiere Chapel, Loyola Chapels, Dr. A. Santos Avenue, Sucat, Parañaque. Exact birth date and birthplace were not made public in the obituaries; GMA reported only that he was 68. No personal Wikipedia article existed at the time of his death. What remains clear is the arc from Wanbol University's Tonette Macho to Brother Anthony: a comic figure of Philippine popular culture who rebuilt his public life around faith, family, and prayer.
