Asish Banerjee was an Indian politician and teacher who represented Rampurhat in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for 25 consecutive years, from 2001 to 2026. A senior figure in the Trinamool Congress, he served as a state minister under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, including as Minister for Agriculture from 2017 to 2021, and was the 13th Deputy Speaker of the Assembly from July 2021 to May 2026.

He was born on 3 November 1951 in Rampurhat, in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. He studied at the University of Burdwan, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees and a doctorate, and where he was elected general secretary of the university students' council. He went on to teach Bengali at Rampurhat College, rising to associate professor, and he remained known locally as a teacher throughout his political life.

Banerjee first won the Rampurhat seat in 2001 and held it at every election through 2021, making him a five-term MLA. In 2014 he joined the state government as Minister of State with independent charge of Ayurveda, Unani, Naturopathy, Siddha, Yoga and Homeopathy, and later held responsibility for biotechnology, statistics and programme monitoring. In September 2017 he succeeded Purnendu Basu as Minister for Agriculture. After the 2021 election he was chosen as Deputy Speaker, serving under Speaker Biman Banerjee. He also chaired the Tarapith Rampurhat Development Authority.

His long run in Rampurhat ended at the 2026 Assembly election, when he lost the seat to Dhruba Saha of the Bharatiya Janata Party, as the Trinamool Congress lost power after 15 years in government.

On the morning of Sunday 16 August 2026, Banerjee was found dead inside a Trinamool Congress office next to his home in Rampurhat. He was 74. The day before, he had hoisted the national flag at a local Independence Day event there. Police recovered a note in Bengali in which he said that no one was responsible for his death and maintained that he had never been involved in corruption, referring to allegations linked to the development authority he had chaired. Police said they were investigating the circumstances, and his body was taken for a post-mortem examination.

Mamata Banerjee said he had devoted much of his life to teaching and serving society, describing him as a humble man with a close bond with the people of Rampurhat and Birbhum. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said he had spoken to the family and had shared a cordial relationship with him. Party colleagues, including MP Satabdi Roy, joined his funeral procession in Rampurhat that evening.

My grandfather was in his class at Rampurhat College before he left teaching for politics, used to tell us how patient he was with Bengali grammar. Got a call from my mother this morning telling me he was gone. Twenty five years as MLA for that one seat, five wins in a row, that part never gets talked about enough.

Police recovered a note written in Bengali in which he said no one was responsible for his death. In it he maintained that he had never been involved in corruption, said he had no role in tender decisions, cheques, plan approvals or certificates at the Tarapith Rampurhat Development Authority, and said attempts had been made to malign him. Police said they were investigating the circumstances, and his body was taken to Rampurhat Medical College for a post-mortem examination.

Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress said he had been falsely accused and subjected to relentless pressure. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said he had spoken to the family and assured them of police action. His funeral procession and last rites took place in Rampurhat the same evening, attended by party figures including MP Satabdi Roy and MLA Kajal Sheikh.
