Barbara Gawryluk was a Polish children's author, a translator of Swedish children's literature and a radio journalist who spent more than thirty years at Radio Kraków, where she presented the Sunday programme "Alfabet" about books for children and young people. She wrote more than twenty books for young readers, among them Dżok. Legenda o psiej wierności and Zuzanka z pistacjowego domu, and translated close to fifty Swedish books into Polish. She died on 16 October 2026, aged 69.

She was born in Kraków on 19 May 1957 and studied Swedish philology at the Jagiellonian University. In 1992 she joined Radio Kraków, working first in the news department and later in culture. Her programmes included "Alfabet", the literary programme "Z radiowej biblioteki" and "Książka na szóstkę", which won the Polish section of IBBY's Book of the Year award for promoting reading in 2010. She also reported on Sweden for national and local media.

Her own books began in 2004 with Kaktus dobry pies. Dżok (2007) retold the story of the Kraków dog who kept waiting for his dead owner; a children's jury of the Polish section of IBBY honoured it, and in 2012 it was placed on a list of ten important books chosen for the tenth anniversary of the campaign "Cała Polska czyta dzieciom". Zuzanka z pistacjowego domu won the Kornel Makuszyński Literary Prize for 2009, and Mali bohaterowie, about children who saved other people's lives, received the 112 Award of the European Emergency Number Association in 2014. Later she wrote a series about working dogs, a biography of the poet Wanda Chotomska that was named Kraków Book of the Month in December 2016, and family guidebooks to the Tatra mountains and the Podhale region.

As a translator she brought into Polish every volume of Martin Widmark and Helena Willis's detective series about Lasse and Maja, as well as Moni Nilsson's Tsatsiki books. Sweden made her a Knight First Class of the Order of the Polar Star in 2021 for her work for Swedish culture in Poland.

She left the air in the autumn of 2025 because of her health. After two years of treatment for Parkinson's disease she was diagnosed in December 2025 with multiple system atrophy, a rare and incurable neurological disease, and in an interview published by Radio Kraków in August 2026 she spoke about it to make the illness better known. Her children, Agata and Jacek, announced that she died on the morning of 16 October 2026, peacefully and surrounded by her family, after a long and serious illness. They ended their message with a request to her readers: think of her and reach for one of her books.

In their own words

“Teraz jednak poczułam, że to ostatnia szansa, żeby powiedzieć ludziom o tej okrutnej chorobie.”

Interview with Sylwia Paszkowska, Radio Kraków, published 3 August 2026 (Now, though, I felt that this was my last chance to tell people about this cruel disease.)

“Pomyślcie o niej i sięgnijcie po jedną z jej książek. Na pewno będzie jej miło.”

Her children, Agata and Jacek, announcing her death on 16 October 2026 (Think of her and reach for one of her books. She will surely be pleased.)

my mom just called me almost in tears about this, something about a book called Dzok she read as a kid in Krakow. I didn't know the name but she's been talking about it all day.

Nie mam nic do ukrycia, a biography of the children's poet, and, with Paweł Skawiński, guidebooks for families to the Tatras (2021) and to Podhale, Orawa, Spisz and the Pieniny (2023).

As a translator from Swedish she rendered close to fifty books into Polish, including all the volumes of Martin Widmark and Helena Willis's Lasse and Maja detective series, several books by Moni Nilsson, among them the Tsatsiki stories, and picture books by Pernilla Stalfelt. She was a member of the Unia Literacka writers' association.

Barbara Gawryluk died on the morning of 16 October 2026, aged 69. Her children, Agata and Jacek, announced her death on social media, writing that she had died peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, after a long and serious illness. The place of death was not reported.

She had stepped away from Radio Kraków in the autumn of 2025 without explaining why. In an interview with her colleague Sylwia Paszkowska, recorded on 2 July 2026 and published by Radio Kraków on 3 August 2026, she disclosed that she had multiple system atrophy (MSA), a rare and incurable neurodegenerative disease. She said it had first affected her throat and speech, that she had been treated for Parkinson's disease for two years before the correct diagnosis in December 2025, and that she had decided to speak because it was her last chance to tell people about the illness.

Radio Kraków, the Swedish Embassy in Warsaw, RMF FM, TVN24, Onet and Rzeczpospolita all marked her death. Funeral arrangements had not been announced at the time of writing.

Legacy

Radio Kraków described "Alfabet" as a cult programme with fans among whole families, and colleagues there said that many of them had learned the craft of journalism from her. Her book about Dżok helped keep alive the story of the faithful Kraków dog commemorated by a monument in the city, and it was placed on the "Cała Polska czyta dzieciom"…

Radio Kraków described "Alfabet" as a cult programme with fans among whole families, and colleagues there said that many of them had learned the craft of journalism from her. Her book about Dżok helped keep alive the story of the faithful Kraków dog commemorated by a monument in the city, and it was placed on the "Cała Polska czyta dzieciom" anniversary list of ten important children's books. Through her translations, Polish children came to know the Lasse and Maja mysteries and other modern Swedish writing for young readers, work for which Sweden awarded her the Order of the Polar Star. Her other honours included the Kornel Makuszyński Literary Prize, the IBBY Book of the Year award for promoting reading, the 112 Award and, in 2025, the Dumni z Powstańców decoration.
