Ernest Hemingway's spare prose changed American writing. He wrote The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea, and won the Nobel Prize in 1954.

My grandmother loved Ernest. When she died we played their work at the funeral. Now they're both gone. Strange how connected it all is.
