My grandson used to send me clips of this guy, never knew much else about him. Told my son about it the minute I saw the news, we just sat there a while not saying much.

Braydon Hepworth was a 21 year old father from Christchurch, New Zealand, whose disappearance in September 2026 and the discovery of his body the following month became one of the most closely watched stories in the city. He was not a public figure in the conventional sense. He became known to the country because he went missing, because his family's search for him dominated local news for more than a month, and because the circumstances in which his body was eventually found raised serious questions about the care he had received from a city welfare agency shortly before he vanished.
Hepworth had Type 1 diabetes and needed daily insulin, a detail his mother, Char Huntley, raised repeatedly in public appeals once concern grew that he had not been seen or heard from. He was also the father of a young daughter. In the months before he disappeared he had been living in transitional housing run by the Christchurch City Mission. The Mission's chief executive, Corinne Haines, later confirmed that Hepworth had been asked to leave that accommodation in mid July 2026, a departure a staff member described as abrupt, saying he was given only a short window to leave the unit.
Hepworth was last confirmed on CCTV footage on 3 September 2026, and some accounts place a further sighting on England Street in the Linwood suburb of Christchurch on 14 September, after which he was not seen or heard from again. His mother told media there had been no activity on his phone or bank accounts, and she pleaded publicly for anyone with information to come forward, writing that her family was broken by not knowing what had happened to her son. Police mounted a search that widened over October 2026, examining a property on England Street believed to be his last known address and later executing further warrants in Linwood and Edgeware.
On 8 October 2026, police said their inquiries suggested Hepworth was no longer alive, and hours later confirmed that a body had been found at a residential property on Hereford Street in Linwood, during a search warrant. The body, believed to be Hepworth's, had reportedly been concealed in a shed at the rear of the property. Police have treated the death as unexplained, and a post mortem examination, while carried out, has so far been described as inconclusive. A 60 year old man was subsequently charged with offences relating to concealing a body and making a false statement to police, and was granted interim name suppression.
Hepworth's death prompted an outpouring of public sympathy and sharp questions about how he had been treated by the agencies meant to support him. More than one City Mission staff member resigned in its aftermath, citing concern over his treatment and wider culture at the organisation, and the Mission has said it is considering an independent investigation. No cause of death has yet been established, the police investigation remains open, and the full circumstances of what happened to Braydon Hepworth in the weeks before his body was found are still unknown.
