so I'm sitting in a hostel in Chiang Mai of all places, half watching some trivia show, and my phone just buzzes with this. weird because I only found Died Pretty like two years ago through a random algorithm thing, Harness Up came on a drive playlist and I didn't skip it, which for me is basically a five star review. anyway I looked up the drummer after and it's this guy who apparently taught English out here for years, same country I'm backpacking through right now, that's a strange thing to sit with at 1am. didn't know him, never saw them live, just liked the song more than I expected to. edit: just read he was in and out of the band for like three decades, that's a long time to keep coming back to something

Chris Welsh was an Australian drummer best known as the longtime rhythmic engine of the Sydney alternative rock band Died Pretty, one of the most respected and influential acts to emerge from the Australian post punk and indie scenes of the 1980s and 1990s. He had been recruited to the band from his earlier work with groups including The 31st and the Screaming Tribesmen, and he went on to play on the records that cemented Died Pretty's reputation as a critically adored live and recording act, including their commercial high point, the 1993 album Trace, which reached the national top 20 and produced the hit single Harness Up.
Welsh's time in Died Pretty was not continuous. According to discography records he played drums in the band across several stints between 1985 and 1992, 1993 and 1995, briefly in 2008 and 2009, again in 2012, and then steadily from 2016 onward. In between, he stepped away from music for an extended period to work as an English teacher in Thailand, where he later settled with his family, only returning to the drum stool for reunion shows and recordings as the band's profile was rediscovered by new generations of fans.
Welsh's partnership with Died Pretty's frontman, Ron S. Peno, stretched back more than four decades to Brisbane's post punk scene, long before Died Pretty existed. That bond endured through the band's most celebrated years and into its later life as a touring nostalgia act beloved on the Australian circuit.
In mid 2023 the band was forced to cancel a planned October tour of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne after both Peno and Welsh were sidelined by cancer. The band said at the time that Ron's cancer fight was ongoing and that Welsh had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer, with both men's treatment schedules making it impossible for them to perform. Peno, who had been fighting oesophageal cancer since 2019, died in August 2023 at the age of 68. Welsh continued his own treatment, which at one point also included surgery to remove a cranial tumour that was later found to be benign, and friends organised a public fundraiser to help support him through the ongoing cost of his care.
Chris Welsh died on the evening of Thursday 8 October 2026 after what was described as a multi year battle with lung cancer, three years after Peno's death. His passing was announced by the Noise11 music news outlet and confirmed through tributes from the Australian music community. He is survived by his wife, Neung, and their two sons, Jack and Louis. Fans and musicians from the Australian alternative rock scene, many of whom had followed his illness through the 2023 fundraiser and subsequent updates on his recovery, paid tribute to a drummer whose playing helped define one of the country's most enduring alternative bands.
