In their own words

This is a wonderful occasion and I know so many people here. It's brought back so many memories.

80th birthday, Royal Esplanade Hotel, Ryde, 2021 (County Press)

It was just a dream come true. Here was I, a kid from the IW, at number one in the hit parade. I would walk by building sites in London and hear guys singing or whistling Only Sixteen.

To John Hannam on hitting No. 1 (County Press)

My dad played Only Sixteen on the radio when I was a kid and I asked him why it was so catchy. He said, 'That's Craig Douglas, clean as they come.' Lost a real gentleman. Rest easy.

A milkman who became a star and stayed decent about it. That's rarer than any number one.

Saw him at a seaside show in the eighties. Still had that voice, still had the charm. A real professional.

My parents had Only Sixteen on 45. Heard it so many times growing up. Rest well, Craig.

Worked hard his whole life, never forgot where he came from. That's a life well lived.

Twin from Prospect Road to the milk round

Born Terence Perkins on August 13, 1941, in Prospect Road, Newport, Isle of Wight, a twin in the large Perkins family of William and Mildred. Hannam records eight children including three sets of twins; AllMusic notes nine children and three twin sets. The family later lived on the Pan Estate. He attended Priory Boys School. Before fame he worked at Bill Strickland's Farm in Calbourne as farmhand and milkman, the origin of the Singing Milkman tag.

Priory Boys School

Educated at Priory Boys School (later Priory Boys Secondary Modern) on the Isle of Wight. No conservatory or formal higher music degree is documented; professional grooming under Bunny Lewis included singing, elocution and acting lessons in London after discovery.

From Medina Cinema to Only Sixteen and the Beatles bill

November 1957 talent win at Medina Cinema led to Bunny Lewis and Janique Joelle, the Craig Douglas name, Empire Portsmouth billing as the Boy with the Golden Voice, and Six-Five Special with Cliff Richard and Joe Brown. Top Rank breakthrough: UK No. 1 Only Sixteen (1959), NME Best New Singer, string of Top 40 covers, It's Trad, Dad! (1962), Liverpool…

Family roots, London years, return to the Island

Son of William and Mildred Perkins; twin; large sibling group (Hannam eight / AllMusic nine, both with three twin sets). Lived in London from his teens (Dolphin Square at the height of fame) and returned to the Isle of Wight in later life after ill health. In Beat Magazine he said he did not marry and would have liked children…

Clean-cut entertainer, not a rock rebel

Public image and interviews cast him as a Pat Boone / boy-next-door figure rather than a rock rebel. AllMusic stresses clean diction and comfort with dignified pop over hard rock and roll. Bradstock frames him as proof that late-1950s Britain still had room for that style beside skiffle and Presley imitators.

Island milkman who briefly outpaced the giants

Sole UK No. 1 Only Sixteen remains his signature; four consecutive No. 9s are a chart curiosity. He links Isle of Wight popular memory to Abbey Road, Six-Five Special, Richard Lester's first feature, and an early Beatles stage bill. County Press and Hannam keep him central to Island music heritage; AllMusic calls him one of the more enduring Avalon/Fabian-type British…

NME Best New Singer and silver disc

NME Best New Singer / Top New Singer of the Year 1959. Silver disc reported for Only Sixteen (Hannam). UK No. 1 and multi-week chart run per Official Charts. No major later industry hall-of-fame induction was located in the sources reviewed.

No major scandals documented

Sources do not document personal legal scandals. Notable career frictions include Bunny Lewis turning down Sunday Night at the London Palladium unless three songs were allowed (Hannam called it a major management error) and the Rolling Stones' milk-bottle prank after Douglas's uncomplimentary Melody Maker review of Come On. Treat as showbusiness colour, not moral controversy.

4 September 2026

Died September 4, 2026, age 85. Family spokesperson: passed peacefully after a very short illness, family by his side; privacy requested (County Press). Specific medical diagnosis and resting place not made public in sources reviewed.
