Deepak Babaria was a senior Indian National Congress organiser from Gujarat and a former general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Known as a behind the scenes man and seen as a close confidant of Rahul Gandhi, he spent about five decades in Congress work without ever holding elected office. He died in Ahmedabad on 10 October 2026, aged 75.

A chemical engineer by profession, Babaria had been with the Congress since the 1970s. He began his political journey by championing the rights of workers and raising his voice for labour and trade unions, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge recalled, and that advocacy helped him build a presence in Gujarat politics before he took on national responsibilities.

On 9 September 2017 he was appointed AICC general secretary in charge of Madhya Pradesh, replacing Mohan Prakash. Working alongside state Congress president Kamal Nath, he oversaw the 2018 assembly election campaign that returned the party to power in the state after 15 years. Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said that after the victory Babaria asked Rahul Gandhi to free him from all responsibilities. He later suffered a brain stroke, and in 2020, shortly after the Congress government in Madhya Pradesh fell, he resigned the post citing ill health. Mukul Wasnik replaced him.

After recovering he returned to active work. He was considered a strategist for the party and was involved in drafting its election manifestos, especially in Gujarat. He served as one of the observers tasked with deciding the chief minister after the Congress won the Karnataka assembly election, and in 2023 he became the party's general secretary in charge of Haryana and Delhi, taking over those states from Shaktisinh Gohil.

Babaria had been unwell for a long time and was admitted to Jivraj Mehta hospital in Ahmedabad in his final days. He died there on Saturday 10 October 2026, and his last rites were held that afternoon at the Ellisbridge crematorium. Rahul Gandhi called his death extremely heartbreaking and an irreplaceable loss, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called him a dedicated soldier of the Congress, and tributes also came from Kharge, Randeep Surjewala, Amit Chavda, Shaktisinh Gohil and Paresh Dhanani. He was survived by two daughters. His death came three days after that of another Gujarat Congress veteran, Veerji Thummar.
