Most Rev. Devprasad John Ganawa, S.V.D., Bishop of Udaipur, died on 4 October 2026 at St Teresa's Hospital in Udaipur after a massive cardiac arrest. He was 74. The Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) announced that he had felt uneasiness and chest pain at the Bishop's House that morning, was rushed to hospital, and breathed his last at about 11.45 am Indian Standard Time. His funeral Mass was set for 7 October 2026 at Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral, Udaipur.

Ganawa was born on 8 December 1951 at Panchkui Parish in the Diocese of Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh, India, to Daniel Ganawa and Caroline Ganawa. He was the second of eight children, with five brothers and two sisters. He entered St Thomas Seminary at Mhow in 1965 and made his first profession in the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) at Catholic Ashram, Khurda, Madhya Pradesh, in 1974. He took perpetual vows on 7 June 1981. Philosophical and theological studies followed at Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth in Pune. He also completed Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at Government Arts and Commerce College, Indore. He was ordained a priest on 27 October 1982.

His early priestly years were spent in parish and formation work across central India. He served as assistant parish priest at Khandwa Cathedral (1982-1984) and at Khargone (1984-1986), then as assistant rector of St Thomas Seminary for a year. From 1992 to 1995 he was rector of the Catholic Ashram Juniorate at Palda. He was parish priest of Ranapur from 1995 to 2001, then director of Maitri Sadan, the interreligious dialogue centre in Udaipur, from 2001 to 2008. In those years he also served as a provincial councillor and diocesan councillor. In 2008 he was appointed parish priest of Meghnagar and rector of the SVD centre in Udaipur.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Jhabua on 11 May 2009. He was consecrated on 16 June 2009 by Archbishop Leo Cornelio of Bhopal, with Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal and Archbishop Abraham Viruthakulangara as co-consecrators. On 21 December 2012 Benedict XVI transferred him to the Diocese of Udaipur. He also served as apostolic administrator of Jhabua until 10 October 2015. His installation as Bishop of Udaipur was celebrated in February 2013 at St Paul's School, Udaipur, in the presence of the apostolic nuncio's representative. His episcopal motto was "The Joy of Hope."

As Bishop of Udaipur he was known for pastoral attention to the poor and tribal communities of southern Rajasthan, for formation of priests and religious, and for supporting education. In March 2026 he blessed the foundation stone of Don Bosco College at Banswara, a Salesian higher-education project he had invited into the diocese. At the site he prayed with the words of the psalm, "If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do the builders labour," and said the work was large and hard but that they relied on God's help. He also co-consecrated Bishop Peter Rumal Kharadi in 2024.

Ganawa belonged to the Society of the Divine Word and remained rooted in its missionary charism. He appeared in interviews and reflections on the YouTube series Our Moments with God with Fr Dominic Emmanuel, SVD, and was remembered by confreres for a love of classical Hindi hymns. Cathedral and diocesan life at Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral, Udaipur, marked his years as ordinary. English Wikipedia still described him in the present tense at the time of his death; the CCBI notice of 4 October 2026 is the authoritative confirmation.

He is remembered as a shepherd who joined formation, dialogue, and episcopal leadership across Jhabua and Udaipur for more than four decades of ordained ministry. The CCBI called his death a significant loss to the Church in India, to the dioceses he served, and to the Society of the Divine Word.

Only read about him last year, some piece on tribal missions in Rajasthan. The Joy of Hope line stuck with me. 74 is no age.

Beliefs and views

His episcopal motto, The Joy of Hope, framed a ministry oriented toward pastoral care of the poor and tribal communities, priestly and religious formation, and interreligious dialogue through centres such as Maitri Sadan. At the Banswara college foundation in March 2026 he publicly grounded a large educational project in trust in God rather than human planning alone, quoting Psalm language about the Lord building the house. Cathedral materials described his leadership as focused on equality, youth, and living tradition under that same motto.

Legacy and impact

Ganawa's legacy spans two dioceses: three years as Bishop of Jhabua and nearly fourteen years as Bishop of Udaipur. Awards and honours

Public sources emphasize his episcopal appointments by Pope Benedict XVI rather than civil awards.
