Just read her obituary online, the one everyone's sharing, and sat with it a minute. Seventy years married, eight kids, and it made the news. Something almost radical about that now.

Elizabeth "Betty" Catherine Folz Spahn was a homemaker and matriarch from Rockford, Illinois, whose life was defined by more than seventy years of marriage, eight children, and a large extended family that grew to include seventeen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was not a public figure in the conventional sense of politics, business, or entertainment, but her obituary, published by Sundberg Funeral Home of Rockford, drew wide attention as an account of an ordinary American life lived across the twentieth and twenty first centuries, one marked by devotion, faith, and quiet perseverance.
Betty was born on January 12, 1930, in Evansville, Indiana, the second of five children of Edward and Madeline Folz. She grew up on the west side of Evansville and graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in 1948. On December 1, 1951, she married Gilbert "Gil" Adam Spahn at St. Boniface Catholic Church, beginning a partnership that would last more than seventy years. Together they raised their family across several states, beginning in Haubstadt, Indiana, and continuing through Evansville, St. Joseph in Michigan, Rockford in Illinois, and Harrodsburg in Kentucky, before returning to Rockford, where they settled for good.
As a stay at home mother, Betty devoted herself to raising eight children: Cathy, Terri, Marie, Gil, Jane, Greg, Steve, and Linda. Those who knew her described her as empathetic, welcoming, and quietly strong, a woman who stood up for what she believed in and built a life centered on service, devotion, and joy. Her husband Gil, who died in 2022 at the age of 94, had spent his own life full of music, craftsmanship, and generosity toward others, and the couple's shared faith and family life became the foundation the rest of the Spahn family carried forward.
Betty Spahn died peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2026, in Rockford, Illinois, at the age of 96. Her death was announced through an obituary arranged by Sundberg Funeral Home, Ltd. of Rockford, published in mid September 2026. No cause of death has been made public. She was preceded in death by her husband Gil, her son in law Paul Goethe, her sister Edna, and her brother Robert.
News of her passing brought tributes from her family describing a legacy of compassion, faith, humor, and steadfast love that her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren said they would carry forward. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on October 17, 2026, at St. James Catholic Church in Rockford, Illinois, to be followed by a procession to Calvary Cemetery and a celebration of life in the parish hall at 12:30 p.m.
