I just read about him an hour ago in a piece on Catalan protest music, had never heard the word Edigsa before today and now I'm sitting here stunned that the man behind it just died at 95. Wild how you can learn someone's whole life story the same day you learn they're gone.

Enric Cirici i Delgado was a Catalan chemical engineer, paper industry businessman and cultural activist who spent much of his life supporting Catalan language culture under and after the Franco dictatorship. He was one of the founders of the record label Edigsa, which launched the Nova Cançó movement, and one of the group that made possible the Avui newspaper, the first Catalan language daily to reach the newsstands after the Spanish Civil War. He died in Barcelona on 27 October 2026, aged 95.
Born in Barcelona in 1931, Cirici trained as a chemical engineer and also earned a diploma in European studies. He made his living in the international paper trade, and his contacts in the sector later proved useful when the founders of Avui needed printing capacity.
As a young man he took part in the civic protests of the late 1950s and 1960s, including the campaign against the La Vanguardia editor Luis Martínez de Galinsoga, the 1960 Palau de la Música events and the campaign known as Volem bisbes catalans. In 1961 he was among the founders of Edigsa, where he looked after the business side while Josep Maria Macip handled the artistic direction. He later recalled that the label never paid a dividend and that its partners had to put in money every year. He also helped promote the Ona bookshop, an early champion of books in Catalan.
Cirici believed a Catalan language press was essential, and he worked for years with Josep Espar i Ticó and others to raise support for a daily newspaper, travelling from town to town to sign up small investors. When Avui finally appeared on 23 April 1976, he was, almost by accident in his own words, at the head of its publishing company. In 2026, on the paper's fiftieth anniversary, he was described as the last surviving member of that founding group.
In retirement he turned to writing, publishing the novel Raquel and accounts of his generation such as La generació dels Fets del Palau and Cançons per a un temps de silenci, a study of the Nova Cançó. He sat on the board of the Ateneu Barcelonès, where he started the Cruïlla de debat discussion group.
He died at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona on 27 October 2026. El Punt Avui, the successor to the newspaper he helped create, marked his death with an obituary describing him as the man who made Avui possible and helped keep it alive. The cause of death was not made public.
