My Italian flatmate in the 90s used to put Ricomincio da tre on whenever she was homesick, I didn't understand half the dialogue back then but Marta's face said everything, that kind of patient exasperation with a man who won't grow up, universal really. I only found out years later it was Troisi's first film as director. Anyway I just read she's gone, 73, and I'm sitting here thinking about that flat in Cardiff and the subtitles we never bothered with. Sorry, rambling. She was good in it, that's the point I meant to make.

Fiorenza Marchegiani was an Italian actress of stage, film and television whose career ran from the theatre of the 1970s to popular television drama in the 2020s. She is best remembered as Marta, the independent young woman at the heart of Massimo Troisi's first film as director, Ricomincio da tre (1981), and later as Letizia Visconti in the long running soap opera Vivere.
She was born in Osimo, in the Marche region, on 31 July 1953, and her family also had roots in the nearby village of Offagna. She trained at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Rome and began her career at the Teatro Stabile di Genova, acting in Ostrovsky's The Forest and in Goldoni's The Venetian Twins under the director Luigi Squarzina.
After early roles in RAI television productions, she became widely known in 1981 when Troisi cast her as Marta, the girlfriend of his character Gaetano, who challenges him to grow up and face his fears. Her performance was well received by audiences and critics, and she followed it with two more films in 1982. From then on she worked mainly in television while continuing to appear in films and on stage, in plays by Shaw, Strindberg and Giuseppe Patroni Griffi.
Her television work included I ragazzi del muretto, Incantesimo, Sospetti, Elisa di Rivombrosa, Distretto di Polizia, Un amore e una vendetta and Le tre rose di Eva, as well as Vivere, in which she played Letizia Visconti Gherardi from 1999. On the big screen she appeared in Natale a New York (2006) opposite Christian De Sica, and her later credits included the series I bastardi di Pizzofalcone in 2023. Her home town of Osimo awarded her its civic merit in 2005.
She was the mother of the footballer Filippo Maria Scardina, who dedicated his first goal for AS Roma, scored in a Europa League match against CSKA Sofia in 2009, to her.
Fiorenza Marchegiani died at her home in Albano Laziale, near Rome, on the morning of 11 August 2026, aged 73. She had withdrawn from public life some years earlier, and the cause of her death was not made public. The mayors of Osimo and Offagna paid tribute to her, and her funeral was held in Rome at the church of Santa Lucia del Gonfalone on 13 August.
