Franklin W. Harford was a retired United States Marine Corps master gunnery sergeant and later a federal criminal investigator who spent most of his adult life in government service. He was not a nationally prominent public figure in the way of a politician or celebrity, and most of what is publicly known about him comes from the obituary published by his family through Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home and Crematory in Dale City, Virginia.
He was born on January 3, 1944, and entered the Marine Corps in 1962. He entered the Marine Corps in 1962 and spent his first 4 years in Artillery, where he served a tour in Vietnam. After his artillery service he moved into military law enforcement, where he spent the next 26 years as an Investigator, Chief Criminal Investigator and sometimes Provost Sergeant at Marine Corps bases and other areas around the world. He retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant in 1991, then dedicated another 10 years to the Federal Government as a civilian Criminal Investigator in Washington, DC, bringing his total career in uniformed and civilian government service to more than four decades.
Harford's life combined over 30 years of active duty Marine service with a second career investigating crime, a path his family described as part of a story of service and perseverance that extended well beyond his own life. He was married twice, first to Setsuko Shimura Harford, who predeceased him, and later to his wife of 35 years, Toshi Twasaki, of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. He was the father of Franky Harford, Dustin Harford and Thomas Anthony Harford, and he was a grandfather and great grandfather to a large extended family.
Franklin W. Harford died on October 7, 2026, at the age of 82, at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, with family by his side. His obituary states that he passed away peacefully; a specific medical cause of death has not been made public. His death was announced through an obituary published by Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home and Crematory of Dale City, Virginia, which serves the Triangle, Virginia area near Marine Corps Base Quantico.
Because Harford lived a private life after his public service career, there has been no wider media coverage or public tribute beyond the funeral home's notice and the memories shared by family and friends on the funeral home's tribute wall. A visitation and graveside service are planned, with burial expected at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico, reflecting his long military career.
