My mother called from Amstetten to tell me. Didn't know the man but she said he kept the old inn going long after most would've sold up. That's a kind of faith too.

Günter Kiermaier was an Austrian innkeeper and Social Democratic politician from Amstetten in Lower Austria. He sat in the Austrian National Council for the SPÖ from 1990 to 2002, led the party in the Amstetten district for many years, and headed the Social Democratic business association of Lower Austria from 1993 to 2007.
He was born on 10 November 1942 in Amstetten into what he later described as a middle-class family. He trained first as a retail salesman and then, after military service, as a waiter, and from 1965 worked in his parents' inn. In 1972 he took over his mother's guesthouse, and in 1994 he was given the honorary professional title of Kommerzialrat. In the late 1990s he turned the guest rooms of his inn into a private retirement home with 30 apartments for older people.
Kiermaier said his path into social democracy began in childhood, when an elderly neighbour he regarded as an aunt took him, without his parents knowing, to a May Day march. He recalled seeing old men who had been interned at Wöllersdorf in 1934 embrace one another as comrades, and said that sense of community made him want to belong. He was also a committed Catholic and led the Lower Austrian branch of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Christentum und Sozialismus, a group bringing together Christians and socialists. He told his story in an autobiography titled Mit Kreuz und roter Fahne, meaning With Cross and Red Flag.
He became a city councillor in Amstetten in 1990 and entered the National Council on 5 November that year, serving until December 2002. He was chairman of the SPÖ in the Amstetten district until 2003, president of the Social Democratic business association of Lower Austria and vice president of the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce. He received the Grand Silver Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria in 2001 and the Silver Commander's Cross of Lower Austria in 2008.
Kiermaier died on 29 October 2026 at the age of 83, after a long illness. The Amstetten Social Democrats mourned him as a Social Democrat with heart and soul. His requiem was set for 5 November 2026 in the parish church of St. Stephan in Amstetten, followed by burial in the old town cemetery.
