73 is no age at all these days. I found Guruh Gipsy through a prog rock forum years ago and never expected the story behind it, a president's son making that kind of music. Thinking of his sister Megawati tonight.

Mohammad Guruh Irianto Sukarnoputra, known widely as Guruh Sukarnoputra or Guruh Soekarnoputra, was an Indonesian musician, choreographer, songwriter and politician, and the youngest child of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, and Fatmawati. He died in Jakarta on 26 September 2026 at the age of 73.
Guruh was born in Jakarta on 13 January 1953. He grew up in the Sukarno household as the youngest of five children with Fatmawati: Guntur, Megawati, Rachmawati, Sukmawati and Guruh. His early schooling was at Perguruan Cikini (elementary and junior high) and SMA Negeri 25 Jakarta (1967 to 1970). In the early 1970s he studied archaeology at the University of Amsterdam. Indonesian biographical accounts say he did not complete that programme. Later he earned Indonesian higher degrees, including a Sarjana Administrasi Publik from STIAMI (2005 to 2008) and subsequent master's degrees in management and public administration.
Rather than enter politics at once, he built an arts career that mixed progressive rock, pop kreatif, traditional gamelan colours and large-scale stage choreography. In 1977 he and the musicians of Gipsy released Guruh Gipsy, a landmark album that fused Western rock structures with Nusantara gamelan and featured Chrisye among its singers. Tracks such as Chopin Larung, Barong Gundah and Indonesia Maharddhika became touchstones of Indonesian creative pop. He founded performance companies including Swara Mahardhika and later GSP Production (Gencar Semarak Perkasa), produced well over a hundred choreographic works, and wrote songs that entered film and television, among them Gita Cinta dari SMA, Anak Jalanan, Melati Suci, Kala Cinta Menggoda and, decades later, Kala Sang Surya Tenggelam for the series Gadis Kretek (2023). In 1991 France named him Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Rolling Stone Indonesia listed him among The Immortals: 25 Greatest Indonesian Artists in 2008. He received AMI recognition as songwriter and a lifetime achievement award, and the Nugraha Bhakti Musik Indonesia honour in 2011.
He entered the People's Representative Council (DPR) in 1992 for the Indonesian Democratic Party. After the 1996 Medan split he joined the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), led by his sister Megawati Sukarnoputri. He sat again from 1999 to 2024, representing East Java constituencies including Blitar Regency, and became one of the longest-serving members of Indonesia's parliament. While in office he continued to stage national cultural spectacles, including the opening of the 2000 Indonesian National Games in Surabaya and later pageants such as Beta Cinta Indonesia.
In 2002 he married Uzbek-born Azeri dancer Guseynova Sabina Padmavati in Tashkent, with further ceremonies in Jakarta. The marriage later ended in divorce; public sources differ on the year. They had no children reported in standard biographical notices.
In public remarks he often argued that Indonesian music should carry a national character and reach the world without abandoning Bahasa Indonesia or local forms. He compared Indonesia's industry favourably with foreign pop industries while urging artists to promote original culture.
His health declined over roughly a year. After about four weeks at Medistra Hospital in Jakarta he was moved to MRCCC Siloam Hospitals Semanggi. He died there at 4:16 a.m. Western Indonesia Time on 26 September 2026. PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto confirmed the news and described him as a major artist, a Marhaenist figure and a party fighter. His remains were taken to the family mourning house on Jalan Sriwijaya Raya in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.
Guruh leaves a dual legacy: a body of music and choreography that helped define late twentieth-century Indonesian arts, and three decades of parliamentary service under the Sukarno family banner in PDI-P politics.

In their own words
“Di bidang musik itu kita maju dari segi industrinya tentu karena dari segi teknologi yang sedemikian maju. Kemudian dari segi sumber daya manusianya seperti senimannya apakah pemusik, penyanyi, itu sih maju. Cuma yang kita belum berhasil, kan kapan ya kita bisa lebih mendunia?”
Speaking to Liputan6 on his 65th birthday, 13 January 2018, about the Indonesian music industry.
“Contohnya Korsel, K-Pop. Kalau saya pribadi enggak merasa kita kalah sama Korea karena Korsel sendiri sangat terasa Amerika, bukan kebudayaan Koreanya yang dimajukan.”
Same 2018 Liputan6 interview, comparing Indonesia with K-pop.
“Keluarga besar PDI Perjuangan sungguh kehilangan Mas Guruh Soekarnoputra. Beliau dikenang sebagai seniman besar, sosok Marhaenis, dan Pejuang Partai.”
