Harjit Singh

Harjit Singh was killed in the early hours of 18 September 2026 while on night duty at the Bhagtanwala grain market in Amritsar, an area under the jurisdiction of the Gate Hakima police station. He was posted with the Police Control Room (PCR) at the time.

According to police, two unidentified men riding a motorcycle approached him at around 3 am and opened fire at point-blank range. He was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Press accounts vary slightly on the precise number of gunshot wounds he sustained, with reports referring both to multiple bullets fired at close range and, specifically, to three bullets.

No motive or suspects had been publicly identified at the time of writing, and Punjab Police said the case was under investigation. The shooting occurred on the same night as a separate, apparently unconnected killing of a young man elsewhere in Amritsar, which some early news reports mentioned together with Harjit Singh's death simply because both occurred in the city within hours of each other.

Punjab Police Director General Gaurav Yadav publicly acknowledged the killing, stating that Harjit had laid down his life in the line of duty. The state government responded with financial support for his family: officials said the Punjab government announced an ex-gratia assistance of Rs 1 crore for the bereaved family, while an additional insurance amount of Rs 1 crore would be provided for his dependants.

The killing also became a point of political contention. Opposition Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia referenced Harjit Singh's death in public comments about the state of policing in Punjab, and posted about it on social media the same day, though this reflects political reaction rather than settled findings about the case itself.

Harjit Singh served as an Assistant Sub-Inspector with Punjab Police at Gate Hakima police station in Amritsar and lived in Tarn Taran district.

On the night of September 17-18, 2026, he was on motorcycle patrol near Bhagtawala Grain Market (Bhagtanwala Dana Mandi) in the Hakima station area.

Around 3 a.m. on September 18, two unidentified motorcycle-borne men fired multiple rounds at point-blank range. News9 reported a neck wound. He was taken to a private hospital and did not survive.

DGP Gaurav Yadav announced that ASI Harjit Singh had laid down his life in the line of duty, that the force stood with his family, and that he would receive full police honours.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced 1 crore rupees ex-gratia for the family. Officials also cited an additional 1 crore rupees HDFC Bank insurance payout.

The murder followed other recent violence against officers, including the Ajnala shooting of ASI Jaswant Singh and the on-duty death of ASI Pawan Kumar Sharma after a scooter collision.

Opposition voices, including Bikram Singh Majithia, criticised the state government over police security and law and order after the Amritsar killing.

Police launched an investigation to identify the attackers and motive. No claim of responsibility for Harjit Singh's killing was reported in initial national coverage.

He is remembered as a Punjab Police ASI who died while performing night duty in Amritsar's grain market area, with official tributes stressing sacrifice and support for his family.
