Honestly I don't know much about Turkish parliament politics, saw this come across my feed and it stopped me. 80 years old, chemical engineer who ended up chairing a national defence committee. Strange life, the paths people take. Don't really know what to say beyond that.

Hasan Gülay was a Turkish chemical engineer and politician who represented Manisa in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey for two terms, from 1995 to 2002. Elected for the Democratic Left Party (DSP), he chaired the parliament's National Defence Committee and served as the party's secretary general. He died in Ankara in October 2026, aged 80, and was given a ceremonial farewell at the parliament building.
He was born on 15 February 1946 in Akhisar, in Manisa Province, the son of Mustafa and Emine Gülay. He attended primary school in Gölmarmara, then Akhisar Ali Şefik Middle School and Akhisar High School, before studying chemistry at Yıldız Technical University in Istanbul, from which he graduated as a chemical engineer in 1972.
Gülay spent more than two decades in the Turkish energy and refining industry. From 1972 to 1976 he worked as an engineer at Petrol Ofisi, and from 1976 to 1995 he held engineering and management posts at the state oil company TPAO and then the refiner TÜPRAŞ. He was planning coordinator at the TÜPRAŞ Kırıkkale refinery when he stood for parliament.
At the general election of 24 December 1995 he was elected a deputy for Manisa on the DSP list, and he was re-elected in 1999. In parliament he chaired the National Defence Committee, and within the DSP he held the post of secretary general. On 12 August 1999 he submitted a bill to make his home town of Akhisar a province in its own right, an initiative still remembered there. Later in the term he joined the New Turkey Party founded by İsmail Cem, and he sat for it until the parliament was renewed in November 2002. He spoke French and English, and was married with one child.
His death in Ankara, of illnesses related to old age, was reported on 19 October 2026. That day his coffin, draped in the Turkish flag, was carried to the steps of the parliament's ceremonial gate, where family members, party leaders including Özgür Özel and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the former Speaker Bülent Arınç, deputies and parliamentary staff paid their respects. He was buried the same day at Gölbaşı Cemetery in Ankara.
