Ivan Gudelj (1960-04-21 to 2026-09-02) was a Croatian footballer and coach whose name is inseparable from Hajduk Split and from one of the most abrupt career endings in Yugoslav-era football. Born in Imotski and raised in the village of Zmijavci, he began at NK Mračaj in neighbouring Runovići under Marinko…

In their own words

Moja karijera je završila u trenu! U 26. godini mi je pozlilo na utakmici između Hajduka i Crvene zvezde na Poljudu i nakon toga više nikad nisam zaigrao.

On career ending; documentary-era interview retold in Jutarnji/Slobodna Dalmacija

Dječak iz malih Zmijavaca dođe u veliki grad Split, u veliki, poseban klub, Hajduk, i onda mu se do 26. godine ostvare svi snovi... a onda u jednoj sekundi doživiš šok i sve izgubiš.

Gudelj was a proper midfielder. Broke career, built himself back up. That matters more than the trophies.

My dad played football in the 80s and had a poster of Ivan Gudelj on his wall for decades. Said he was the kind of player who made you think differently about the game. Rest well.

We visited Split in 1984 and my husband made sure we caught a Hajduk match. He pointed out this young captain and said, 'Watch him, he's special.' Sad to hear he's gone. Those memories stay.

What a life he lived after everything fell apart. Finished his degree at 42, went on coaching young people, stayed faithful. That takes real strength. Rest well, Ivan.

Early life

Ivan Gudelj was born on 1960-04-21 in Imotski and grew up in Zmijavci in the Imotska krajina. As a child he considered becoming a Catholic priest. He also appeared as an extra in the 1972 Zagreb Television series Prosjaci i sinovi, filmed in Zmijavci; in an escape scene he outran the other children. He started football at NK Mračaj Runović under Marinko Boban before moving to Hajduk Split as a boy (HNS: arrived 1975 on Andrija Anković's recommendation).

Education

After forced retirement he studied at the Faculty of Kinesiology (Kineziološki fakultet) in Zagreb and qualified as a professor of kinesiology / graduated in kinesiology. Named secondary schools are not detailed in major obituaries reviewed.

Spoke of family hardships including a blind sister, an ill brother, deceased parents, and a niece who died in an accident, while refusing self-pity. Faith deepened after illness.

Beliefs and views

After hepatitis B he described finding strength in faith in God and in family support; later Christian testimony videos quote him saying suffering brought him to Jesus Christ. He framed career loss as something to accept because worse suffering exists in other families. He stayed publicly tied to Hajduk identity and to youth development as a moral duty. No detailed…

Legacy and impact

Remembered as a Hajduk symbol of the late 1970s and early 1980s, a Yugoslavia captain of rare youth, and a coach through whose hands many later Croatia internationals passed. HNS president Marijan Kustić at the Poljud commemorations stressed generations of players who met him as boys before medals and transfers. Documentary Ivanova igra and book Hajdučka priča extended his story…

Controversies

No criminal scandal documented in major obituaries. Documented hardship: public stigma after hepatitis B diagnosis, including people avoiding him and false association with AIDS; he described an acquaintance crashing into a pole rather than greet him. Some fan debate exists around Hajduk's 1980s league politics (he later said Hajduk let a match to Dinamo in 1984 so Dinamo would not…
